Jacob Chapman attempts to zing a punt forward quickly for St Mirren, but it doesn't come off and Rangers will come right back at the visitors, who are being made to suffer.

St Johnstone manager Simo Valakari tells BBC Scotland: "A big task. It's a big challenge ahead of us but a challenge we really want to take full blast and see where it takes us.

"The starting point is you need to do your basics right. When you have a moment, try to ask questions of our opponent.

"There's no doubt about our quality and how we want to play. Now we play at the moment the best team in the country.

"[Zach Mitchell] felt a little bit fatigued. He wanted to play, we wanted him to play but at the same time you need to respect physiology as well and give him some extra days to recover so he will be OK for next week.

"I was very excited to be able to sign [Josh Campbell]. He will bring his experience, his desire, his competitiveness. He will make us a better team.

"We worked so, so, so hard during those dark and cold days during the last season to get here and now we are here so as we always say, let's go and compete."

Rangers manager Derek McInnes tells BBC Scotland: "There's been small steps of progress - winning games of football while looking for better performances.

"Five wins in six have settled things down and we have a bit of confidence in the side.

"We have worked hard to get where we are and it is time for players to crank it up and get used to that winning feeling."

As for Badredine Bouanani's debut, McInnes says: "He is one who brings us that left-sided winger and a lot of quality.

"We just feel in light of the schedule we've had, it is a good game to introduce Bouanani and Kevin [Kelsy] to the team to carry more of a goal threat as [Kim] Min-su and Findlay [Curtis] looked a bit leggy in training.

"St Mirren have shown they are a team that create chances and we have to nullify that and don't let them play their own game."

Rangers ultimately gave St Mirren a bit of a doing in the League Cup last month. The Ibrox side have now won 25 of their past 28 home games against the Buddies in all competitions.

And, bizarrely, Derek McInnes has never lost as a manager at home to the Buddies in the top flight, winning 10 and drawing seven of 17 such games across spells with St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts.

However, St Mirren have won three consecutive away games in the Premiership, the first time they have done so in the top flight since May 2007 (also three in a row).

St Mirren have a player who was born in 2010 on their bench. My goodness.

It's 15-year-old Marcello De Barros.

St Mirren manager Craig McLeish tells BBC Scotland: "After the Celtic game, we tried to take positives out of it.

"We also touched on our last performance here and we know we need to do better to get a result.

"You are playing against a fantastic side. Like Celtic, they can hurt you in so many ways and we were on the receiving end of it last time.

"But we are confident and in a good place right now."

Celtic boast a formidable record against newly-promoted sides. They are unbeaten in 37 league games against Premiership newcomers (D6 L31) since Hibernian beat them in April 2018.

However, St Johnstone won their last home league game against the Parkhead side. Saints last beat Celtic in successive home league matches in April 1999.

Despite that defeat in Perth in April 2015, Celtic have won 23 of their past 26 meetings with St Johnstone in all competitions (D2 L1), most recently a 5-0 Scottish Cup semi-final victory in 2024-25.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill tells BBC Sportsound: "Big match for us tonight.

"Concerned about the game because St Johnstone are playing so well at the minute. They've shown their mettle. It'll be a tough test for us. They're comfortable with the ball, they want to play.

"[Cameron] Carter-Vickers had played every single game. The last stages of the game on Saturday night, I thought he was wilting, just feeling a little bit sore. I thought the best thing to do is just leave him out completely.

"[Camilo] Duran, [Benjamin] Nygren, who have scored big, big goals, don't start but I'm quite sure they'll be on the field at some stage or another.

"[Viljami] Sinisalo has done really well, taking over from Kasper [Schmeichel] last season. We've got a lot of games. It's a chance what to see what [Sam Johnstone] is capable of doing."

Asked about his first return to the McDiarmid Park in 25 years, O'Neill said: "It feels 25 years, there's definitely no question about it."

I think Naderi is industrious, but he is a bit scruffy, a bit hash and bash.

I am not sure he has the quality of strikers gone by and being a Rangers player.

Given the injuries, it is a huge time for him to come in.

With fellow striker Youssef Chermiti expected to be out for a lengthy period after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage, Lawrence Shankland's absence comes at a particularly bad time for him and for Rangers.

"Having [Shankland] and Youssef out, two guys that guarantee you goals at Premiership level, there's no doubt it's a blow for us," manager Derek McInnes said.

Rangers were good value for their win over Motherwell, but with the number of chances they created it should have been more comfortable.

Ryan Naderi is yet to convince since joining last winter, even after scoring a winner that was gifted to him on Saturday.

The only striker on Rangers' books whose stats compare favourably with Shankland is Bojan Miovski, but the former Aberdeen favourite has found it difficult to get a consistent run in the side.

Big-money signing Kevin Kelsy had a golden opportunity to announce himself on his debut against Motherwell but showed little composure as his shot clipped the crossbar on its way out.

Of course, it is far too early to rush to judgement on Kelsy's ability to fill the Shankland void, but 13 goals in his past 46 games would suggest the Ibrox club have not signed an out-and-out scorer.
