Hearts coasted to a thumping Scottish Premiership victory over St Mirren, firing five past their visitors as they ran riot in Gorgie.

From first whistle to last, the hosts dominated with intricate attacking play and a high press that didn't allow St Mirren any time on the ball.

It is exactly the blueprint head coach Wouter Vrancken pitched to fans when he was appointed and is already bearing fruit as his side returned to winning ways after two matches without victory.

Laurent Mendy got Hearts started with a ferocious finish before Calvin Miller added two penalties. Claudio Braga made it four and Josh McPake completed the rout.

Mendy's was, arguably, the best strike. When Hearts were desperate for the breakthrough, it was the French midfielder who showed the forwards how to do it. A loose ball broke to him in the St Mirren box and he lashed into the top corner.

Then came Miller's two spot-kicks either side of half-time before a brilliant fourth from Braga. The Portuguese forward was slipped in on the left, took a touch round goalkeeper Jacob Chapman and rolled the ball in for his first goal from open play in nine games.

McPake deservedly added his name to the scoresheet in an outstanding performance just a few days after making his Scotland debut. Beating Liam Donnelly to the ball, he rifled home when one on one with Chapman.

Hearts remain third, just three points behind leaders Rangers, while St Mirren have now had two heavy defeats on the bounce in a four-game losing run.

Hearts analysis: Five going on 10 as Vrancken style clicks

To win 5-0 and be anything other than utterly delighted would be downright greedy. And yet...

So dominant was the display from Hearts, a few in the dressing room might be annoyed they didn't add further gloss to the scoreline.

They tore St Mirren asunder at times. One-touch football got them up the pitch and the left-hand side was targeted as McPake took players on for fun.

But James Wilson might be getting a clip round the ear for not being more ruthless, as he passed up a few chances and failed to get among the goals.

You can't criticise a performance like that, though. Vrancken was beaming at full-time and no wonder.

His style of play has clearly imprinted on his new side. The players know what they have to do and they executed it with aplomb.

Sterner tests await. Hearts have to be at their best when they travel to Celtic Park next Sunday, off the back of a midweek Conference League tie against FC Nordsjaelland.

The momentum swings between Hearts and St Mirren

St Mirren analysis: Fragile Buddies stuck in a rut

St Mirren were the feelgood story in the first few weeks of the season. A young Scottish manager, doing things his own way and getting results.

Now, Craig McLeish faces a real challenge. How does he pick his side up off the canvas after shipping eight goals in two games amid a run of four successive defeats.

While Hearts had benefitted from the three-week break, St Mirren looked far from the side that impressed in the opening spell of the season.

The fluid passing, the tactical confidence, it all evaporated in Gorgie. They struggled to play out from the back - although did create two good chances for Luke Thomas and Calvin Ramsay which should have been taken.

The real worry will be the fragility - and poor decision-making - of the back line. The timing of the second penalty was killer, with Donnelly - only just on as a substitute - making a silly challenge.

All the tidy football goes out the window if you can't do the basics at the back. That needs sorted pronto before the trip to Pittodrie next Saturday.

What they said

'I hope I can give them more wins' - Ageu after first home start for Hearts

Hearts head coach Wouter Vrancken: "We played a good game, simple as that. Out of possession, in possession. We scored a lot of goals, nice goals, and kept a clean sheet which is always a good thing.

"You score goals with the whole team, the build-up from the back was good. That's why the players get in good position."

St Mirren manager Craig McLeish: "A really sore one, a self-inflicted one. We didn't look anything like we wanted to.

"Two penalties and three individual errors on our part, we kill ourselves. You can't give yourself a foothold in the game if you do those sort of things."
