Times Square turned into Buenos Aires on Saturday night as thousands of Argentina fans gathered to sing, dance and celebrate their team's latest appearance in the World Cup final.

They got a good soaking too as New York was hit by heavy storms all day.

I'm glad to report the sun is shining today with both sets of fans partying outside the ground.

I live in Spain. Quite funny talking to people here, they say it is so long since they last won it (16 years). They obviously have no idea what it is like to be English.

This is the view from my seat in the press box.

Absolute chaos getting in, with media queuing for two hours with the Secret Service taking over security at the stadium.

I feel like a kid on Christmas Day morning.

I've covered Women's World Cup finals, Euros, FA Cup finals. Today I'm watching Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal in the World Cup final.

    Very special.

Spain offers close to zero room for error, locking opponents inside a possession cycle. However, Argentina possesses the ultimate tactical wildcard. In Lionel Messi, they have a magician capable of breaking any system, finding spaces that do not exist on paper. It is the irresistible force meeting an immovable object.

    Abinash, India

For me, Messi is the best of all time but he has had his World Cup win. Hope Spain win it as they have been best team. Rodri is a class act and deserves to lift the trophy.

  10. Messi and Spain go hand in handpublished at 18:11 BST

    Spain v Argentina (20:00 BST)

It's pretty ironic that Lionel Messi will today come up against a Spain side who, if you think about it, he goes hand-in-hand with.

When La Roja won the World Cup in 2010, seven of the starting XI played for Barcelona at the time. Who else played for Barcelona at that time? Messi.

The way he plays and the way Spain play the game are intertwined thanks to Barca's style being so similar to that of the national team.

Will Messi be able to roll back the years to unlock this Spanish team?

  11. Postpublished at 18:08 BST

    Spain v Argentina (20:00 BST)

When it comes to Lionel Messi's numbers. Well, they speak for themselves...

    • Leading appearance maker with 33
    • One of only two players, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, to play at six men's World Cups
    • Only player to win two Golden Balls - 2014 and 2022
    • Scored in every round on the way to lifting the trophy in 2022 - the only player to do so
    • Holds the record for most men's World Cup assists with 12
    • Scored or assisted in 11 consecutive World Cup appearances, extending the longest-ever run by a player on record since 1966
    • Scored in a record nine men's World Cup games in a row
    • He will also become only the second player after Cafu to play in three World Cup finals.

Lionel Messi is sensational. He has been the difference for Argentina.

Out of possession, he doesn’t work at all. Spain will control the game and they will dominate.

I covered the Argentina v Switzerland game, and the Swiss were better than Argentina.

I thought the winner would come out of the France v Spain semi-final. ‘The final before the final.’ I think Julian Laurens was bang on with that assessment.

  13. Rewind: Messi finally achieves World Cup glorypublished at 18:04 BST

    Spain v Argentina (20:00 BST)

Lionel Messi finally achieved his destiny by winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Four years on, Argentina are 90 minutes (perhaps slightly more) away from immortality. Can they become just the third team ever to retain their crown?

  14. Will this be Messi's last World Cup game?published at 18:02 BST

    Spain v Argentina (20:00 BST)

It is clear that defending champions Argentina have all been pulling in one direction this tournament and that direction is Lionel Messi.

The 39-year-old will cement his status as the G.O.A.T if he wins a second consecutive World Cup trophy tonight, becoming only the second captain to do so.

It is remarkable to think that Messi initially retired from international football back in 2016 before changing his mind.

The World Cup final will be his 34th appearance in the competition, but will it be the last we see of Messi in the famous blue and white stripes?

If he goes until the 2030 World Cup, he will be 43. You wouldn't put it past him to be honest.

This World Cup he has been as magic as he's ever been.

    John Murray
BBC football correspondent on The Football Daily Podcast

This is a one-off cup match, so anything is possible in the course of 90 minutes.

Lionel Messi because we have commentated on him a lot over the years. We have seen him a lot in club football, I have commentated on him at every World Cup.

He, to me, has got the edge [over Cristiano Ronaldo]. It feels like he scores every time I watch him.

The way he bounces off people, for the size he is and how rarely he has been injured is remarkable.

Argentina are playing rope a dope football. Tire the opposition out then with 20 mins left. They'll flick the switch again. And win.

I love watching Argentina. When Argentina got in front against England - we were going direct, Tuchel ball late on - the way they defended the box and how ferocious they were. They look like a team and a nation where it means more to Argentina.

  19. Argentina fire their way to the finalpublished at 17:48 BST

We have not seen him yet at this tournament but his presence tonight at the MetLife Stadium is adding to the queue situation.
