Rangers missed the chance to return to the Scottish Premiership summit as they played out a captivating draw at Dundee.

Chasing a third straight victory of their own, Steven Pressley's side played superbly in the first half and took the lead when Bradley Fink rounded Ivor Pandur and slotted home via the post.

However, just five minutes later, Badredine Bouanani's deflected shot nestled in the top corner for his first Rangers goal.

The Ibrox outfit were a different animal after the half-time break and hit the front after a spell of sustained pressure as Nico Raskin scored a stunning goal, crashing in off the crossbar from 25 yards.

Rangers appeared in total control, but gifted Dundee a leveller when captain Dan Neil stumbled in possession and allowed Callum Jones to slot a first-time shot past Pandur.

Neil had a chance to atone for his error soon after, but could not poke a close-range effort over the line and Dundee held on to take a point and end Rangers' seven-game winning streak.

Dundee stay fourth, while Rangers are a point behind leaders Celtic, who host Hearts on Sunday (15:00 BST).

Rangers analysis: Bouanani bright but Neil slip costs side

Having recovered from a lacklustre start, Derek McInnes must have thought his team were on course for an eighth successive win in all competitions when Raskin smashed in an early contender for goal of the season.

They had done the hard work, forcing Dundee back into their own half and getting themselves in front, but one lapse in concentration meant they dropped two points.

Neil was blindsided by Jones and scuffed his attempted backpass, allowing the Welsh midfielder to level.

The Rangers captain's immediate reaction and his sheepish applause to the away end at full-time was that of a man who knew he had cost his team, but he probably still has credit in the bank after two excellent Old Firm performances.

McInnes said on Friday that it is too early to be putting pressure on Celtic and Hearts by going top, but he will now be watching Sunday's game at Parkhead with added interest as he hopes not to lose further ground on their arch-rivals.

The main positive for McInnes and Rangers was the performance of Algeria winger Bouanani, who was very bright on his second start for the club.

He showcased a trickery and cleverness from the right flank and took his goal superbly.

Dundee analysis: Pressley's culture club impress again

Pressley spoke at length this week about how he values culture above all else and said pre-match that he wants his players to play with a "psychological safety".

They did just that in a hugely impressive first-half display, passing out from the back, pressing high up the park and creating several chances.

Joe Bevan dragged his shot wide after a lovely team move unpicked the Rangers defence, Ashley Hay had a bullet header hit the bar, and Ethan Hamilton fired just wide from outside the box.

When Fink pounced on a second ball to score his third of the campaign, no-one at Dens Park could have argued it wasn't deserved.

Even in the second half when they went behind, Dundee continued to battle for every ball.

Led by Owen Bevan and Ryan Astley, they kept themselves in the contest with some brave defending and some excellent saves from goalkeeper Owen Goodman.

Their perseverance paid off as Jones forced an error from Neil and found the bottom corner.

Dundee are fully deserving of their league position after a bright start to the season and Pressley insists there is plenty still to come from this tight-knit bunch.

What they said

'I just wanted to win' - Pressley

Dundee manager Steven Pressley: "When we put things into perspective, we are the first team in eight games to take a point off Rangers so that says a lot about the group.

"The word I used prior to the game was bravery and we showed that in possession. There are really pleasing aspects, but I wanted a win tonight. People will say it's a terrific point and it is, but that bit in me, just after the first half, thought we could get all three points.

"Of course not taking anything away from Rangers, they have some dangerous players, although I desperately wanted the win, the point is a really good point and it doesn't stop our momentum. The players can be really proud of themselves."

'Like a balloon popping' - McInnes on Dundee draw

Rangers manager Derek McInnes: "It's a magnificent goal from Nico, but we had so many more chances, we need to make better decisions, we shouldn't need to score more than two goals to win a game of football.

"That 25 minutes of play shows what the team is capable of. When we play in that manner we're a very good team.

"We've made a mistake for Dundee's equaliser and it was like a balloon popping and we then had to dig deep and go again, and we never quite managed to get to the same levels.

"It does feel like a missed opportunity, but in fairness to Dundee they were good value in the first half. It shows you why they are where they are in the league, but we can't come away from home and have to score three goals to win a game.

"I think the fans believe in this team, as I do, and I think the team believes. It's a disappointed dressing room as it feels like a defeat and that is the way it should feel."
