Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

They [England and Argentina] are in quite similar places, as teams, in terms of performances in this tournament.

They are probably both showing similar qualities that is getting them through. Grit, absolute willingness to not be beaten and a couple of absolute star players that can get the job done.

If you match those two up, everyone wants to see this game.

When you think about the match-up, the players that are in there, the midfield battles, the centre-forwards and the goalscoring ability on show, it's a cracking game, isn't it?

Let's face it - two teams going at it in this position...I think it is going to be a brilliant game.

  4. Maybe this is the best of England - Keanepublished at 14:09 BST

    Norway 1-2 England (AET)

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane questioned England manager Thomas Tuchel's assertion that his players can find another level in their performance when they face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

"Why are we suggesting they can play better? Maybe this is the best of England," said Keane on ITV, after England needed extra-time to beat Norway 2-1 in their World Cup quarter-final in Miami.

"How many times have we said that [England can play better]? I know what he [Tuchel] is saying, but can that happen?"

We are so used to watching videos of wild celebrations, with pints of lager and goodness knows what else being sprayed across spectators, at raucous watch parties for England matches.

But what about this image of a crowd of more than 10,000 people watching the game in total silence at the 2000trees music festival near Cheltenham?

The festival organiser agreed to beam TV coverage of the England game on to big screens next to the main stage after Saturday's headline act had finished.

The only catch was that the festival's noise licence restricted them from using the stage speakers.

But a canny solution was found - giving the many thousands of spectators headphones normally used for a silent disco.

You can see the glow-in-the-dark head sets on this image sent in by James Meakin, who attended the festival.

"It was an incredible experience watching England close out the 2000trees festival on the silent disco headphones," said James.

"It was an unreal atmosphere - 10,000+ people finishing their weekend watching England get through to the semis...in complete silence!"

    World Cup holders

Like England, it would be fair to say that Argentina have had - on paper at least - a relatively easy passage to the semi-finals, having faced no teams in the top ten of the FIFA World Rankings so far.

But they have made extremely hard work of it, especially during the knockouts, requiring extra-time in two of their matches and coming back from two goals down in the other to set up a showdown with the Three Lions.

Here are their results so far, with the rankings of each team they've faced coming into the tournament in brackets:

    Group Stage

    3-0 vs Algeria (35)

    2-0 vs Austria (24)

    3-1 vs Jordan (66)

    Knockouts

Round of 32: 3-2 vs Cape Verde AET (68)

    Round of 16: 3-2 vs Egypt (34)

    Quarter-finals: 3-1 vs Switzerland AET (17)

When Fifa officials changed the draw process for this World Cup they did so with complete transparency.

World football's governing body said it wanted to ensure the four top-ranked countries could not meet earlier in the knockout rounds, thus potentially saving blockbuster games for later in the tournament.

It was not really a problem before.

In a 32-team World Cup, group winners could not face each other in the last 16.

You must go back to 2010 to find two of the world's top four meeting before the semi-finals, when the Netherlands beat Brazil 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

The 48-team World Cup, with an extra knockout round, made early meetings between group winners not only possible but almost certain.

It happened in three games in this summer's last 16, with United States playing Belgium, England facing Mexico and Switzerland meeting Colombia.

So Fifa felt it had to make a tweak due to the expanded format for 2026.

Fifa wanted to prevent one of these matches being a glitz and glamour game, and thus guarantee losing a top-four team.

The same ranking system was used for the Club World Cup last year, though one of the four top seeds (Real Madrid) made it to the semi-finals.

This time, it has worked out as Fifa intended.

Huge congrats to England, but the semi-final draw shows what a waste of time Infantino's expanded World Cup is. The four top seeds - who FIFA deliberately kept apart until the semis - have now all, unsurprisingly, reached the semis. It's just taken us over a month to get there.

The top four FIFA-ranked countries (as per rankings before the tournament) have made it through to the semi-finals. After so many games to get to this point is it all a bit… predictable?

The top four teams in Fifa's world rankings have made the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time.

And the progress of Spain (1), Argentina (2), France (3) and England (4) was aided by a Fifa change for the 2026 World Cup.

They were put in separate quadrants of the draw so they could not meet before the semi-finals.

For that to happen they had to each win their groups - which they did.

The separation in the draw meant that Spain could not meet Argentina before the final.

Additionally, England and France were put in opposite sides of the knockouts and on a path to meet either Spain or Argentina in the semi-finals if they all progressed.

Fifa described the move as ensuring "competitive balance" by establishing "two separate pathways to the semi-finals".

And now the semi-finals are France v Spain on Tuesday, and England v Argentina on Wednesday.

A similar approach happens at Wimbledon, and in the new Champions League format, at which seeds are kept apart in pairs.

Fifa rankings were introduced in 1994, but not used for that year's tournament.

Belgium (2022), Germany (2018), Spain (2014), Italy (2010) and France (2002) were ranked in the top four and did not get out of the group.

At the remaining World Cups since 1998 - the top ranked teams did not all get through to the semi-finals.

    Well spotted, J.

On Tuesday, Spain (1) will play France (3) for the chance to play the winner of Wednesday's semi-final between Argentian (2) and England (4).

But no, that's not an indication of Fifa's ranking being bang on the money, though Fifa did have something to do with it.

England captain Harry Kane says that the team failed to "release the handbrake" against Norway and they will continue to search for their "best football" as they prepare to face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday:

"Our messaging before the game was to release the handbrake and go and I still feel that we didn't reach our full potential.

"I see us train and see the ability, especially how good we are in the final third. We haven't quite put that together yet.

"I mean, we are in the semi-final of the World Cup not having played our best football, so if we can find it this week, if we can find it in the game on Wednesday, then that can be the difference between winning and losing this tournament.

"We have got to enjoy it, because we are in the semi-finals of the World Cup, so recover and enjoy it then the preparations start for another big game in a few days."

    Ashley Young

I've been saying since the start of the tournament that I don't think England have played extremely well. They've not been great, but we're into a semi-final. And I think that's what you have to take the positives out of, especially with the game against Mexico the other day, with the altitude and, you know, going down to 10 men for a long time, long period. You know, being able to come through that game was tough in itself.

Going one-nil down [against Norway] to then show the character and the strength that the squad's got to come back from that and win the game You know, for me it was only going to be one team that was going to win [in extra-time] and I think the boys definitely showed that they had the character to go on and win the game and they look, they actually look like the fitter ones than Norway in the end of it.

This feels different to 2018. We were happy to be there and lets be honest not as good as now. This feels more real that we can win. Whether we win the whole thing who knows. But to realistically be discussing England possibly in a World Cup Final is incredible.

    David James
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Former England goalkeeper David James has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Argentina's displays during the knockouts of this World Cup and how that may give England confidence.

He said: "The nice thing about Argentina is that they've had three really tough games. They haven't looked the Argentina that we saw over the last edition of the World Cup. They've struggled to get through.

"I can't say that England having to go to extra-time means that we're better than Argentina having to go to extra-time, but I think from what we've seen in England performances so far, they'll be confident that they can put together a performance to go through to the final."

I think Eze and Bellingham on the pitch does not work. The second Rice came off, Mainoo was our best profile available to pair with Anderson. Konsa doesn't come forward as a right back, he cannot be paired with Saka. We need James fit and Gordon is vital for Argentina's pace.

    John Barnes
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

On his emotions at the full-time whistle, when England confirmed their place in the World Cup semi-finals:

Relief, as it has been throughout the World Cup because of last-minute winners and last-minute equalisers, which we have done and which other teams have done.

It wasn't the greatest performance [from England] and I didn't expect the greatest performance. I have said all along that we are not going to be playing sparkling football.

The team is designed and set up for Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to score. [It's set up] for teams to maybe even play better than us - they said it themselves.

From Thomas Tuchel to Harry Kane to Jude Bellingham, this is a team of resilience, determination, effort and a never-say-die attitude in the face of adversity.

That's got us this far. Can it take us all the way to win it? That remains to be seen...but it's been spectacular.

England would have been punished by other teams tonight. We mentioned Sorloth's chance to play in Haaland and they would have been 2-0 down at half time.

The quality and intensity has to improve, especially if they are coming up against a team that want to be compact. They have to move the ball with intensity, which we saw with Bellingham's first goal.

On the other hands sometimes you have to suffer. In a World Cup game, there's the heat and humidity, and when they had that chance, they took it.

We all know analysing the game that they didn't play well enough to go and win the tournament. But there's something about getting over the line.

I go back to Real Madrid a couple of years ago when they beat PSG, Manchester City and Chelsea in the dying moments of the game. It's just that bit of England's game that I'm enjoying at the moment where they can find a way to win.

Yes, they have to improve and the manager is completely right in what he's saying. And Wayne's [Rooney] right in that he's sending out a message. He knows that wasn't good enough.

Celebrate tonight, you got the job done - but there's loads of work to do if you want to win the World Cup.
