The ultimate prize might now be out of reach but there is still a chance for this to end as a historic tournament for England.

OK, winning a third-place play-off for the first time might not be what fans were dreaming of when the World Cup began - but it would ensure this was England men's best finish at the tournament for 60 years.

Victory over France would mean only their 1966 triumph would rank above this year's efforts.

Two previous third-place play-offs at the World Cup have ended in defeat.

Sir Bobby Robson's side were beaten by hosts Italy in 1990, while Sir Gareth Southgate's men lost to Belgium in 2018.

When gold and silver are off the table, you might as well try to take the bronze.

Around 7,000 tickets are still listed on Fifa's ticket sites for Saturday's World Cup bronze medal match between England and France.

As of Friday at 10:00 BST, the game in Miami (kick off 22:00 BST) has not yet sold out with 1,246 tickets on general sale listed at $865 (£657) and $1,125 (£855).

There are a further 5,864 tickets available on the official resale platform, with the cheapest being category three available at a face value of $455 (£346) plus Fifa's 15% fee.

However, there are many tickets in the higher-priced categories listed well below what they were purchased for.

A category one ticket with an original price of $1,125 (£855) has a hugely discounted price of $659 (£500).

"I think Argentina built something over several years and of course have experience of overcoming these kind of moments and winning titles together.

"Lot of reasons, yeah."

"We played in a 4-4-2, Argentina played with a lot of momentum after our goal.

"They had a lot of offensive changes, a lot of offensive positions chasing the goal. We could not stop the crosses and we could not stop the runners into the box, so we decided to play a back five to have more width in the field, to be closer to the guys who cross.

"We couldn't turn the momentum over and we became passive. Argentina found another gear and found their flow.

"It was the first official match in defeat, we played in a semi-final against the reigning World Champions and against the best player in the world.

"We are not there yet, there is still a gap to close. This is what we will do tomorrow, we will not stop chasing, we will not stop challenging."

"Listen, if it's easier, if someone takes the blame, I take the blame. It's no problem - this is the deal that you sign up for.

"If you need someone to blame, I take the responsibility. I'm the head coach.

“We got a lot of problems in the 4-4-2. We couldn't solve the problems later in the other structure. We have to live with this. It's our pain. It's our pain, my pain and the players' pain. We feel the most pain of all. It is our scar that we carry now.

“It is a very painful defeat, and we have to live with this defeat, first and foremost. Not the critics, not the experts, not our family members who suffer as well with us and want only the best for us, but it's basically us.

“We will overcome it. We will use it. We will have a reaction, and that starts from tomorrow. We have a gap to close, and we are aware of that, and that's where the focus is.”

“I view them in the same way, we were too passive.

“I don't regret my decisions, because I felt that we became too passive. I felt that the momentum switched in the match, and I tried to help my team. I tried to support.

“I took several decisions, trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience, trusting my competitiveness. And I took the decision in order to help the team and get the result.

“We didn't get the result, so I take, of course, the responsibility for these decisions. But the decisions are made under stress; the decisions are made in-game. This is in-game live coaching.

“I would regret it if I didn't help. I would regret if we didn't react. But I have no regrets over the decision itself.”

It's safe to say that more than a couple of people are not happy with how Thomas Tuchel approached the end of Wednesday's game.

In his news conference before the Three Lions take on France for bronze, the England boss took responsibility for the loss.

England players saw their families and loved ones immediately after the semi-final defeat against Argentina in Atlanta and it is understood there was a definite sense in those moments that the way the team was set up after going ahead was a contributing factor in their downfall.

BBC Sport is aware of at least three senior players who have complained privately about the team's approach during the closing stages.

There is an acknowledgement that ceding ground on the pitch when defending a lead is a natural instinct for players.

But, equally, there is believed to be a consensus among certain players that Tuchel's tactical switches and substitutions exacerbated their defensive retreat.

Certain players believe the team should have had greater licence to press the ball during the closing stages in an effort to at least try and push Argentina away from their goal – even just to provide some respite for the defenders.

But instead, while some players recognised it as the team simply resorting to clearing their lines and regrouping their shape in defence – it was a tactic some didn't agree with.

There is certainly a sense from some players that they could have been bolder and braver in those closing stages.

One source said: "They went too deep too early."

Some of the consternation from players towards how England were instructed to finish the game certainly paints an interesting picture heading into the rest of Tuchel's reign.

It is nice that at least one fan has been able to see the funny side of things since England broke hearts on Wednesday.

An England fan who was so convinced the Three Lions would win the World Cup that he got a huge tattoo celebrating the "win" has decided to add the words "only joking" underneath.

Sean Carrington got the foot-long £550 inking of the trophy with the words "England World Cup Winner 2026" written below it after the team beat DR Congo.

But along with millions of other supporters he was left railing at another frustrating England exit after Wednesday night's late defeat against Argentina in the semi-final.

The 36-year-old, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, said he had "no regrets" about having it done and was now considering how to have it amended.

However, he admitted he was pleased he rowed back on his original plan - which was to get "It's Coming Home" emblazoned across his chest.

Sean watched the match at Manchester's Depot Mayfield fanzone and said the mood was hopeful when England took the lead with Anthony Gordon's neat strike in the 55th minute.

"The atmosphere was crazy until the very end. But we sat back and gave it away," he said.

"It was depressing - it ended up so flat."

Regarding his tattoo, he said: "I'll probably get 'only joking' added to it."
