French football expert Robin Bairner on Sunderland’s deal for Malick Fofana: “This would be a really tremendous signing not only for what Fofana can provide for them at the moment but for what he can potentially do for them in the future.

“I think it's a great deal not just because of his quality as a player which is undoubted but you know the price point that they're going to get him at we're probably looking at sort of 30 to 40 million euros is absolutely outstanding considering what we've seen other left wingers go for in this market.”

Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton is off after the player decided against proceeding with the transfer.

Everton sought to renegotiate the original £40m fee they agreed to pay Monaco after issues cropped up with the USA striker’s medical.

But Balogun, it is understood, has decided against going ahead with the move.

Right so what happened with Folarin Balogun? Let's ask our reporters.

Now remember Chelsea missed out on signing Lamine Camara from Monaco earlier because the Ligue 1 club pulled the plug as they were going to sell Folarin Balogun - and only needed to sell one of them.

And now Balogun is staying put. So presumably they would have sold Camara in that case.

It seems like Chelsea received a world-record amount in transfer fees this summer - £425m.

Brentford have agreed a deal to sign winger Kiefer Gorman, 17, from Watford.

The move went through earlier today and is expected to be announced tomorrow.

The move sees Gorman jump from the Championship to the Premier League but it is initially an academy signing, with the Bees understood to be excited by Gorman's potential.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery threw down the challenge and Tammy Abraham has chosen to accept it.

The striker's decision to turn down Everton's approach on deadline day shows his desire to make an impact at Villa Park.

Abraham was never looking to leave this summer, there was no plan to find an exit even after a frustrating return to Villa in January.

He was happy, although Villa were open to letting him leave which is why they entertained Ipswich's loan offer last week.

Yet on Monday, Abraham came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and, afterwards, Emery said it was the 28-year-old's decision to stay and reject the Tractor Boys' interest.

That came with a caveat, though, with Emery demanding Abraham improve and find the levels he wants after three goals in 19 appearances last season, following an £18.25m move from Besitkas.

The fact Abraham had another route out on deadline day, to Everton who were left scrambling when their £40m deal for Monaco's Folarin Balogun hung in the balance, and decided to stay speaks volumes for his character and determination.

Record £65m signing Nicolas Jackson will be first choice and Brian Madjo is just 17 but with four competitions and Villa routinely facing three games a week Abraham will get his chance and it is one he must take.

Sources at Chelsea expressed frustration and anger after the transfer deadline passed.

The club believed its move for Lamine Camara was effectively complete after agreeing a fee with Monaco, conducting a medical and reaching agreement on personal terms.

However, Chelsea say they were informed in writing by Monaco that the deal would not proceed.

No explanation has been given, although sources with knowledge of the situation believe the development may be linked to Everton's proposed move for United States international striker Balogun.

Everton maintained throughout deadline day that talks were ongoing despite reports casting doubt over Balogun's medical.

While some reports suggested the deal was off, Chelsea made progress in negotiations for Camara having previously struggled to reach an agreement with Monaco.

Sources in France had stated Monaco needed to make a major sale this summer and preferred to sell Balogun. A source at the Ligue 1 club had previously indicated it would take a "substantial fee" to secure Camara's departure.

Camara featured in Monaco's 2-0 win over Marseille on Sunday evening, while Balogun was left out of the squad.

Yet, when doubts emerged over Balogun's proposed move, Monaco's asking price for Camara appeared to fall, making a move to Chelsea more achievable at £47m.

Once Balogun's transfer appeared to be back on track, Monaco seemed more willing to generate funds through the striker's departure than by selling Camara.

As a result, Chelsea's hopes of ending the transfer window with a late signing were left frustrated.

Monaco have been contacted for comments but not yet responded.
