Hobbs avoids crash to win second cycling gold

Teenager Henry Hobbs avoided involvement in a serious crash on the penultimate lap to sprint to victory in the men's 10km scratch race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 19-year-old had already claimed a gold as part of the men's 4000m pursuit team earlier in the week before following that up with a bronze medal in the elimination race on Friday.

Hobbs, whose brother Noah is a professional cyclist, edged out Australia's Thomas Cornish and England team-mate Ethan Vernon to make it three medals from his games debut.

A crash just before the start of the final lap threatened to disrupt the race with a number of riders requiring medical attention and the remaining athletes having to avoid the debris.

"I didn't feel too good in the morning so I thought if it was a sprint it would be great for me as it only needed one effort," Hobbs told TNT Sports.

"I'm surprised a crash didn't happen earlier because it was so fast - you always have to think you can win but I wasn't one hundred per cent confident."

Elsewhere in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Saturday, England's Sophie Unwin claimed a bronze medal in the women's tandem B final with pilot Anna Whitworth-Hay having only started riding a tandem six weeks previously.
