  3. 'A massive win for us'published at 22:20 BST

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt: "What a way to start off the first innings. Danni [Wyatt-Hodge] and Amy [Jones] looked so composed in what they were doing and built a huge platform for us to explode from there.

"Danni had me running from the first ball. Really happy to find the middle, I had a couple of innings in the warm up games but nothing compares to being out there.

"[We were] really composed and thought about the game in a really good way. Then in the second innings, starting off with three wickets and a power play is going to make it difficult to chase that score down. A massive win for us and really happy that first game is done."

  4. 'Back to the classroom'published at 22:17 BST

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu: "We are not playing our best cricket or doing our best.

"The most important thing for the bowlers is to attack the stumps. Especially the spinners they are bowling the other lines which is not enough.

"We need to play positive and fearless cricket. We lost out momentum in the powerplay, and we need to improve out batting.

"Out next game is New Zealand which is a tough game and we need to execute our plans. We have to go back to the classroom and bounce back."

  5. 'Important to capitalise'published at 22:14 BST

More from Danni Wyatt-Hodge to Sky Sports: "I couldn't time some of the balls through the offside as I would have liked but you have to keep that intent, be brave and run well.

"We talked about how important running was. We ran a lot of twos and threes now. Then it was about capitalising against on the bad balls. My feet haven't been moving my feet as much as possible so I've been making a conscious effort to get them moving and going for it.

"I guess there's always pressure when I am playing for England, for Surrey or in The Hundred. T20 cricket is fickle and you fail more times than you come off. It's important to capitalise on nights like tonight. I said when I got to 50: 'right, double it now'."

England with a convincing performance today winning by a margin of 87 runs. In the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, England have won five matches with a margin of 70 runs or more. Only Australia with six wins have achieved this on more occasions.

Player of the match, England's Danni Wyatt-Hodge for her unbeaten century: "It was great fun out there. What a crowd and really enjoyed playing in front of them here at Edgbaston. What a start.

"It's always great to get off to a good start in a World Cup. I enjoyed playing with Amy [Jones] and Nat [Sciver-Brunt] does what she does best.

"We said how important it was to start well and we did that. Our bowlers did incredibly well to keep them to that total on a good pitch. Now it's off to Southampton and hopefully we can do it against Ireland."

On her cradle-rocking celebration: "My century celebration was for my daughter Daisy. I hope TV got it!"

  9. Postpublished at 22:06 BST

Wyatt-Hodge finished unbeaten on 105 from 62 balls and is unsurprisingly named player of the match.

There was a fifty at the top of the order for Amy Jones as well, and a quickfire 46 from 22 for captain Nat Sciver-Brunt.

We'll hear from match-winner Wyatt-Hodge shortly, who was emotional in her celebrations as she dedicated it to her newborn daughter.

They've set the bar high and I love that. Every team will be watching, they won't have expected that, it's going to plant the seed that England can win.

    I love what that's created.

It was a record-breaking innings from England.

Their 219-1 was their highest T20 World Cup total and their second-highest of all time.

It was Wyatt-Hodge's third international century, too, after a lean run of form coming into the tournament.

Sophie Ecclestone wraps up England's win with the final wicket!

England start their T20 World Cup campaign in style. It's a complete thrashing, set up by Danni Wyatt-Hodge's sublime century and wrapped up by a fine all-round performance in the field.

Big smiles and hugs all round.

Sophie Ecclestone finally joins the party!

Nilakshi de Silva's promising innings comes to an end as she holes out for 37. The previous shot was a lovely flick for four, but Ecclestone wins the battle.

Sri Lanka see out the over but that's still a fantastic performance from Freya Kemp. She finishes with 4-21 as England close in on a comprehensive win.

Linsey Smith recovers well and finishes with a fine spell of 1-25.

Freya Kemp will bowl the penultimate over. Can she take her five-for?!

Well, I said that Sri Lanka could still take some positives from this and Nilakshi de Silva's innings is proving to be one.

She smashes Linsey Smith down the ground for a glorious six.

    Another difficult chance goes down.

Nilakshi de Silva drills the ball straight back Lauren Bell, but it just bursts straight through her hands.

Bell shakes her hand in a bit of pain, but she looks alright. England's fielding will be something to keep an eye on throughout the tournament, but they have been generally solid tonight.

In the last 15 years in T20Is for England (since the start of 2011), today was only the third instance a bowler has picked up three wickets in an over.

    • Anya Shrubsole v South Africa, St. Lucia - 2018
    • Sarah Glenn v New Zealand, Southampton - 2024
    • Freya Kemp v Sri Lanka, Birmingham - Today

Ecclestone recovers well, just a single from the rest of the over as she mixes up her pace.

Nat Sciver-Brunt turns to Lauren Bell to see if she can mop up the innings.
