Whatever England end up setting New Zealand, they'll know it could have been a whole lot less but for Emilio Gay.

The left-handed opener showed a great mix of grit and skill to make it a half-century on debut.

He'll hope for some friendlier batting conditions in the next couple of Tests as he tries to establish himself in the side.

So how many do England need to be comfortable here?

The pitch is still doing all sorts, especially when the clouds roll in and the lights are on.

Might 200 be enough? In which case, they're almost there. Or it is more like 250-plus?

  3. Postpublished at 16:21 BST

This knock from Jamie Smith was much-needed for England because New Zealand had stolen the momentum with a brilliant spell of seam bowling under leaden skies.

They took 4-1 in 11 balls in total, including 3-0 in the space of five balls.

Jamie Smith's just played good shots, it's turning into a crucial partnership because the Ben Stokes wicket had tipped things completely New Zealand's way.

You would say that England have a measure of control over the game but it's hard to say anything definitively on this surface.

    Smith 31, Atkinson 7 | Lead by 193

Four more for Jamie Smith, driving an over-pitched delivery from Matt Henry back through mid-off.

A very lively session in which England put themselves in control, nearly lost it completely in a wild half an hour before calming things down again.

Where does this game go from here? You tell me...

It's got a little bit brighter now and it's like the pitch has gone to sleep. These two are playing with pretty nice control.

That is the best of Jamie Smith.

    Gorgeous shot.

Into the last over of the session and Jamie Smith middles a beautiful drive to the extra cover boundary.

    Do not run for those.

The PitchViz inconsistency rating for this Test so far is 7.5/10 - the highest for a Test in England at this stage.

On a scale of 1-10, higher number = very inconsistent.

    That's another shocker.

  12. Not outpublished at 41 overs

    Eng 158-6 | Lead by 185

    Umpire's call was generous.

The ball pitched outside leg and was going further down. Not out.

Review lost for New Zealand. That's a poor one.

New Zealand go upstairs for an lbw review as Gus Atkinson is knocked off his feet by a yorker from Will O'Rourke.

Given not out and I think this is umpire's call at best.

With more senior players clearly struggling on this track, shows how good that innings from Gay was. I fear for England from this point, our middle order is very fragile these days.

I've been surprised at how sloppy New Zealand have been in the field. It's very unlike them.

Three from Matt Henry's latest as Jamie Smith tries to work a yorker to leg, gets an outside edge to deep third and scurries through for a couple.

A single follows and we've got time for maybe two more overs before tea.

You've got to be bowling straighter than that to Jamie Smith, bring the stumps in play. He wants it there, outside the off stump.

  18. Eng 154-6published at 39 overs

    Lead by 181

Having drawn some quizzical looks with an odd attempted pull off a very full ball, Jamie Smith swiftly moves on by getting up on his tiptoes and drilling the ball through the covers for four.

Such a good shot off the dangerous Will O'Rourke.

There really have been some cracking deliveries and it has not been easy to bat.

But in terms of how many overs that have been bowled, because of yesterday's rain, we're technically not even at lunch on day two!

  20. Eng 148-6published at 38 overs

Matt Henry is, indeed, back for another spell and Tom Blundell is up to the stumps again.

Still plenty of lateral movement on offer and it's a maiden to Jamie Smith.
