Henry Crocombe is still young in his cricketing career. He will not have played that much 50-over cricket. He is still learning and developing, so it is a promising start.

Pakistan skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi, speaking at the presentation: "I think I can't say anything. Shadab and Haris the way they finished the game... Really happy as a captain as well, starting with the bowling, the team effort was spot on.

"We thought we had a lot of variation in the team so that's why we brought Shadab in.

"We need top-order runs, we're struggling. I hope the next few games we'll bring that energy.

"I think tonight we'll be celebrating, tomorrow back to normal."

Harry Brook is discovering what being England captain is all about.

We're in the same hotel as the players, so it will be interesting to see what their demeanour is like.

England captain Harry Brook, speaking at the presentation: "I don't think it went wrong with the ball to be honest. I thought we did an exceptional job to restrict them to us nearly winning the game. We probably didn't quite get enough runs on the board, but the effort the boys put with the ball and in the field was phenomenal and I couldn't ask for any more.

"Ben Duckett played an exceptional innings - his fifth ODI hundred which came at a good time. He played really well and that partnership that he and Sam Curran had together put us in a decent position to kick on. Unfortunately we lost a few wickets in quick succession but the way that Gus Atkinson finished the innings off was awesome.

On his side being mathematically still in with a hope of reaching the tri-series final: "Yes. We have to hope Pakistan beat Sri Lanka but we have got to just focus on what we can do against Sri Lanka really and try to beat them by a big margin."

I look at the way Harry Brook compiled those last 10 overs or so.

He went for a four-over spell of Sam Curran. The aggressive move from a captain is to try to kill the game then.

Given the way Curran bowled the other night it was an opportunity then in the 40th over to say to Henry Crocombe, 'Show me what you have got'.

I guess what the message will be is: 'We're learning.'

It is a team that is learning and building towards the World Cup in 2027.

Ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, if they win this series, it doesn't matter. They have to learn those lessons in this series.

I really strongly believe with the balance of the team that England have at the moment - I think it leaves them short with the ball.

In 50-over cricket, the bowling is what wins you the game. The batting just sets it up.

Can British pundits here simply acknowledge that this was one of the greatest chases and applaud Pakistan instead of blasting England players?

    Hassan

Congratulations to Pakistan. Amazing victory. As for England, they lack cricketing nous. Good teams don't lose games like this as was the case vs Sri Lanka a few days ago.

    Paul, Newcastle

England doing their bit to keep the game of cricket alive in Pakistan and Sri Lanka. I’ll always have July 14 2019 to remember.

England were well short with the runs. They were a good 80 runs short.

That is a 300-plus pitch, so in the end they have lost a game which they deserve to lose because of the lack of runs that they scored.

Pakistan are through to the tri-series final on Saturday.

To join them, England will need Pakistan to beat Sri Lanka on Tuesday and then beat the Sri Lankans themselves on Thursday, probably by a sizeable margin.

England should not have got anywhere near winning today. England bowled nicely today and got themselves into a game which they didn't deserve to be in.

It just feels to me, they're missing a bowler, and they're missing someone towards the death. There is a big hole in their bowling line-up.

  14. How stat?!published at 16:16 GMT

Shadab Khan and Haris Rauf's partnership of 89 was the highest 10th wicket partnership in a successful ODI chase.

    • 89* - Shadab Khan & Haris Rauf v England, Today
    • 64* - Deryck Murray & Andy Roberts v Pakistan, Birmingham 1975
    • 57* - James Faulkner & Clint McKay v England, Brisbane 2014

It's also the first time there's been two 10th wicket partnerships of 40 or more in ODIs, after Gus Atkinson and Henry Crocombe added 40 for England.

Utterly speechless about what we have just seen.

The game was never smooth right from the beginning. England scrapped and fought, but you still felt they were way below par.

All the scars that would have been there from the other evening were reopened.

    This is a good pitch.

This is a good track and there was no pressure on Pakistan in terms of runs and balls.

They had all the time in the world. There was no bowler in the England side to ping the ball around the number 11's ears and make him feel uncomfortable.

  17. How's stat?!published at 16:11 GMT

Highest ODI scores at No.8 or lower:

That had absolutely everything. I feel sorry for Henry Crocombe as he had no warning. A young man in his first game and it was a big call from Harry Brook to bring him on.

Twice in three days England have been on the end of two classic chases. Well played Pakistan, England should have batted out the overs.

    Stuart, Swindon

Congrats to Pakistan. A proper battle and much-needed result for them.

    David, Salisbury

Only England can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
