Still very early days and hard to call. But personally I'd be leaning towards Cox than Smith for the gloves role. Smith has been very frustrating to watch bat recently. Gives his wicket away way too often.

Is it too soon to say that Jordan Cox could be challenging Jamie Smith for a spot in future Test sides?

Four half-centuries - Jordan Cox (73), Joe Root (66), Harry Brook (91), and Dan Lawrence (51) - and a handy late cameo from Jofra Archer (23*) as England post 409 in reply to Pakistan's 171.

England added 43 runs to their overnight score of 366-8.

England have done some damage this morning. Now, it's time for Pakistan to see what they can do here.

The job was done with the new ball.

Khurram Shahzad gets the last laugh, scattering Josh Tongue's bails. He finishes with three wickets.

England are all out for 409 with Jofra Archer unbeaten on 23 (25).

A first-innings lead of 238 for the hosts.

This is quite a nice attack for the tailenders to face. They aren't facing any 90mph balls or any mystery spin.

    Khurram Shahzad. No ball. Sigh.

Then, he overpitches and Josh Tongue straight drives through the legs of a leaping Jofra Archer for four.

Pakistan's attack has been thoroughly underwhelming. Too many gifts.

This is the first time in more than a year that England have passed 400 in an innings. Against India at Old Trafford was the last time, 10 Tests ago.

Stuart Broad has commented on TV that England scoring 400 feels above par. According to CricViz's metric, which is similar to the xG model in football, the hosts should be 238-9 at present, suggesting they really have done well to get where they are.

  9. Eng 403-9published at 89 overs

Josh Tongue grins his way through three dot balls before lofting Muhammad Abbas down the ground for four. Huge beam and a little giggle. 400 up for England.

What I like about Josh Tongue, he's always smiling when he's batting.

Pakistan's seamers are swinging the ball more than twice as much as England's seamers did (1.2° v 0.5°), but aren’t challenging the stumps enough, with just 10% of deliveries on a stump line compared to 15% from England.

  12. Eng 399-9published at 88 overs

Sharp running from Jofra Archer, pushing into the covers and beating the throw as he stampedes back for a second run. A streaky edged boundary through third takes England to 399-9.

    Archer is unbeaten on a run-a-ball 22.

It's the wobble ball that nips back into him, he hasn't got the right length, top edges it straight up. It's a shame because it felt like Jamie Smith could've had some fun out there and accelerated.

Straightforward catch by Shan Masood. Very similar to the dismissal that Jamie Smith fell to in Adelaide.

Hmmm, disappointing exit for Jamie Smith, skying a simple catch to Shan Masood at mid-wicket.

He departs for 25 (52). England lead by 221 runs.

That is a horrible piece of fielding, 1970s throwback there.

That reminded me of my fielding.

  17. Eng 392-8published at 87 overs

Jofra Archer is in the mood, dispatching Muhammad Abbas' final delivery to the rope for four. Little effort from Mohammad Ali to chase it down.

    Seven from it.

My seven-year-old son is a very big fan of The Hundred and is now dipping his toe into Test cricket. On the phone last night I had to field questions from a little boy whose first exposure to the game is limited-overs cricket. "Why is there no powerplay? Why are they playing with a red ball? Why are there so many wicketkeepers? (He meant the slip fielders) Why did Pakistan not have more fielders on the boundary?"

  20. Eng 385-8published at 86 overs

Khurram Shahzad oversteps - his fourth no ball and Pakistan's sixth.

Jamie Smith and Jofra Archer are content to trot three singles before Archer pounds the final delivery of the over into the stands, swivelling as he takes on the short ball. SIX.
