    One of the stories of yesterday was Emilio Gay.

    With pressure on his place, he dug in again for 60 - his third fifty of his Test career.

    He is only averaging 26.1 this summer but one of his predecessors as England's opener Sir Alastair Cook believes he has done enough to start the winter tour in South Africa.

    Emilio Gay's played really nicely. I would say he's confident and intense," Cook told Test Match Special.

    "He is definitely a run-getter when he gets in. He seems to have that real stubborn and strong will to make it count if he can.

    "He has done enough for me to take him to South Africa to continue the progress of a player where the pitches will be slightly easier to bat on and he should open the batting."

    England have been too powerful for this Pakistan batting line-up. But the one thing they haven't done is get a hundred yet. I'm looking at Harry Brook. As good as the bowling has been, the batting hasn't been that good.

    It's a chance to get a decent score and they should get a lead of 200/250. As much as they're winning here, they know there are facets of the team that will get challenged down the line.

    Poor Pakistan - watch all seven wickets fall on opening session of third Test

    This is the third game England's bowling attack has performed at a very good level. We don't know the level they're actually performing at because of the opposition but you have to start somewhere. And after all the stuff that happened with the Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum Test matches, it was chaos in the England set-up.

    People were uncertain about what was happening and now after two and a half games it feels a lot calmer. Results do that and I'm really pleased they didn't change the team.
