New Zealand attacked 13% of the deliveries in that morning session - that's the lowest figure for either team, in any session of the series.

Was Josh Tongue really a better choice than Ollie Robinson. He is going at over five an over, and we have seen how the wicketkeeper standing up to pace bowling slows the run rate by taking shots out of the batter's armoury.

How do we play this? Bazball failure seals Rob Key’s fate. Bazball success just shows it works on a percentage basis. Bat like New Zealand and win and Bazball will finally be proved irrelevant to Test cricket. But will they dare risk their technique on a worn track? Fascinating stuff.

    Mike, Netley Abbey

We are lack cutting edge bowling attack. England have excellent attacking batters but no quality bowlers. Need to find two quickies who can play consistently and one really good spinner. Selectors need to find the next Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Moeen Ali.

  3. Lunch - NZ 180-4published at 60 overs

    Mitchell 47, Blundell 0; lead by 264

Having scored one run in the previous over, Daryl Mitchell goes back into his shell and faces a maiden from Gus Atkinson.

New Zealand have scored 60 runs from 25 overs this morning, with Mitchell out there for all of it - he has 47 from 149 deliveries, with Tom Blundell yet to score alongside him.

The tourists are edging towards a defendable lead - here's Timothy Abraham to see how they get on in the afternoon session.

  4. NZ 180-4published at 59 overs

Tom Blundell comes out after a long wait and faces the last two balls of Shoaib Bashir's over without scoring.

A profitable over for Bashir, who changed ends from the one he was bowling from yesterday - he now has figures of 1-30 from 10 overs.

We'll have one more over before lunch.

    All reds!

Rachin Ravindra falls six short of his century, England have their breakthrough after almost a whole session of toil.

A 129-run partnership comes to an end.

Well it looks like a speculative one from Ravindra. He looks obviously with disappointment as he waits for the review.

  7. New Zealand reviewpublished at 12:56 BST

Shoaib Bashir on for the first time today... and does he have a wicket with third ball?

He strikes Rachin Ravindra on the pads and excitedly appeals, shouting in delight as the umpire's finger goes up.

    Ravindra will review...

  8. NZ 178-3published at 58 overs

Daryl Mitchell faces all of Gus Atkinson's over, and while four runs do come off the six balls, none of them go to the batter.

Atkinson's third ball clips Mitchell and heads away past leg slip for a leg byes boundary.

He hasn't scored a run off the bat since the 51st over.

I know its not the ideal scenario, but are New Zealand scoring quickly enough to put real pressure on an England team that we know can chase when they put their mind to it? At this rate NZ will need to still be batting at tea.

    Ryan, Wigan

Why do the commentators say it is becoming a tough wicket? Either New Zealand prove this wrong or our bowlers are not exploiting it. Surely we can chase on it?

    Bernard, London

One thing new management could do is start caring about the Test World Championship. Slow over rates losing points, no one mentions the table before a series, BBC doesn't have it on their site. If England only ever care about the Ashes they'll get beaten by good sides regularly.

    John, London

We're hoping to add the table to our pages soon, John!

England are desperate to dismiss Ravindra.

  11. NZ 174-3published at 57 overs

    Hello, what's all this?

After just 44 runs off 21 overs this morning, Rachin Ravindra suddenly hits two fours off the first couple of balls of Josh Tongue's latest effort.

He edges past second slip then clips off his pads, moving into the nineties and taking New Zealand's lead past 250.

Tongue then almost takes his outside edge with his final delivery, but Ravindra stays just inside the line.

So much wretched negativity about Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. You miserable armchair curmudgeons forget the halcyon days before Bazball when we won one Test in 17. In the era of T20, Bazball has been an intelligent harnessing of England’s new potential. Stokes’s win ratio is way better that his predecessor Joe Root.

    Matt, Cambridge

New Zealand are giving England another lesson in how to manage a Test match. We should have made wholesale changes after the Ashes debacle.

    Matthew, Oxfordshire

Keep plugging along, Kiwis! A potential win here. However, it's not won until we take 10 English wickets. A game for the taking - not because of Brendon McCullum, but only if we play better than the opposition .

Edged, but dropping short of the keeper!

Gus Atkinson's delivery keeps low and clips the bat of Rachin Ravindra, but hits the turf before it reaches Jamie Smith.

  14. NZ 163-3published at 55 overs

    Lead by 247

Josh Tongue charges in, with Joe Root leading the crowd in a clap of increasing pace as the seamer runs up to the crease.

Rachin Ravindra takes the one single from the over, while Daryl Mitchell - who is one boundary from his 50 - now hasn't scored off 15 deliveries.

  15. NZ 162-3published at 54 overs

New Zealand continue to accumulate slowly, adding one run from this Gus Atkinson over as Rachin Ravindra sends a ball to point.

Their lead is now up to 246.

  16. NZ 161-3published at 53 overs

Two for Rachin Ravindra, turning Josh Tongue into the leg side.

He and Daryl Mitchell then hurry through a bye.

This is New Zealand's third 100-run partnership of the series, while England have managed just one (Duckett and Bethell's 179-run stand).

Among the four century partnerships, the current stand between Ravindra and Mitchell has been the slowest, scoring at 2.9 runs per over.

100-run partnerships for New Zealand in this series:

    • 161 - Nicholls & Ravindra (2nd Test)
    • 317 - Conway & Latham (3rd Test)
    • 102* - Ravindra & Mitchell (3rd Test)

I think this is a tough chase now for this wicket. The way that England go about this now, it to be aggressive.

Gus Atkinson appears for the first time today, replacing Ben Stokes.

He starts with a maiden, with Daryl Mitchell adding more dot balls to his tally.
