Certainly a bold call from Ryan, combining the "bring back Ben Foakes" campaign with the captaincy debate - double potency.

Foakes is 33, and is currently out of the Surrey side as he managed to injure himself bowling in April.

I'm going left-field. Now more than ever we need a steady, classy presence to settle things and rebuild from. That is not Harry Brook. Nor anyone else in the team except Root, who has already tried... So bring back Ben Foakes. And make him captain. Bold but effective.

Eddie's the first to bang the "bring back the near 44-year-old James Anderson" buzzer.

He does, of course, captain Lancashire in the County Championship...

New management and a recall for James Anderson with subsequent captaincy. You heard it here first!

I've got a shout for captain. What about Ollie Pope at six?

    Thanks Timothy.

    Right, let's thrash things out.

We'll start with a suggestion from the Test Match Special box.

    Right.

England need 182 runs to win. New Zealand required three wickets.

My colleague Mike Peter has just polished off some curry and is ready to spice up your life with an England captaincy debate.

    Over to you, Mike...

  10. England 191-7published at 44 overs

Well, England have made it to lunch.

That didn't look likely when Emilio Gay and Joe Root departed in the first 30 minutes of the day.

  11. Eng 191-7published at 43.3 overs

Six men round the bat as Jofra Archer plays watchfully against Mitchell Santner.

If only Ben Stokes was in now and ready to ‘go to the well’ one final time rather than shoot his water pistol around Trent Bridge last night, what a send off that could have been!

    Simon, Pembrokeshire

  13. Eng 191-7published at 43 overs

Ben Sears rattles through a maiden to Jamie Smith which enables Mitchell Santner to squeeze one more over in before lunch.

  14. How's stat?!published at 12:58 BST

    Andy Zaltzman
    Test Match Special statistician

The last time a player batting at number eight for England faced more than 70 balls in both innings was Sam Curran eight years ago, against India at Southampton.

  15. Eng 191-7published at 42 overs

Jofra Archer the new batter. He survives his first ball from Mitchell Santner with a few minutes to go until the lunch break.

A brilliant partnership between Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson.

Mitchell Santner has been getting it to turn and every now and again he's bowled the quicker, flatter delivery.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41.5 overs

    Atkinson lbw b Santner 19 (Eng 191-7)

    Plumb.

The ball-tracking technology shows three reds.

A review very much in hope than expectation from Gus Atkinson, who at least showed some discipline and patience at the crease.

Mitchell Santner got the ball to skid on and Atkinson could not quite his bat down in time.

It's brilliant bowling, the one that just goes straight. Quicker, flatter. So out.

  19. Umpire reviewpublished at 41.5 overs

A fuller delivery from Mitchell Santner hits Gus Atkinson on the back leg as he's late on the shot.

It's given out and looks very out.

    Atkinson reviews.

Had enough of the negativity. This team aren’t perfect and sometimes I get frustrated by their tactics, but the idea that they don’t care about winning is ridiculous. Ben Stokes is a fantastic cricketer, we’ve been lucky to have him and will miss him enormously. And this match isn’t over yet…!
