Pakistan fought back a touch but day one at Edgbaston belonged to England. They lead by 23 runs with six first-innings wicket remaining.

Who are we to comment too much on Joe Root's technique and what he delivers? He stayed leg side of it because he has a little spot and everyone has these little things in their technique where that perfect spot hits on the pad. Because the keeper came up that was hitting him in line then hitting him leg stump.

For most of his career he's been out of the crease, so when it does hit him it has further to travel and it goes down leg side. He's having to fight a slight change of techniques. The problem when you stand leg side of the ball. You can see the first few balls from Muhammad Abbas today he fiddled at the off side because he's not sure where his off stump is because it feels a long way away.

That last 20 minutes I looked down and thought 'what's Harry Brook going to do?'. Well, he went against his grain. He played the situation how he should be playing to make sure he is there tomorrow morning. That's a sign to me that this England Test team has changed already.

Under Joe Root and Stephen Fleming there was definitely a movement in the way Brook played that last 20 minutes. In the past he would've been dancing down, playing a few tricks and flicks, you could clearly see against a world-class bowler. It was over his dead body that he was going to get out. That's what you have to do in Test match cricket for your team to make sure the opposition don't have what they want tomorrow morning.

Now they know Brook is arriving tomorrow morning by showing some mental toughness in that final 20 minutes.

At 39-3 England were in a spot of bother but a calm partnership of 104 followed.

Emilio Gay made his highest Test score of 60 before becoming Razaullah's second Test victim. Harry Brook is unbeaten on 52, having started quickly before settling in for the close late on.

England bowler Josh Tongue, speaking to Sky Sports: "Really pleased with the day. Coming here this morning, putting Pakistan in to bat and bowling them out for 130 - we're in a really strong position.

"Even a good of days out, it looked a good pitch but winning the toss and bowl, to bowl them out cheaply, we all did really well."

On pressure when asked to bowl first: "There is probably a tiny bit of pressure on us to put the balls in the right areas. How we started today with Robbo and Jof, we got them four down early before myself and Gus came on.

"As a collective, I think we've been good all series and that showed today again.

"It's amazing, I came on with them four down, feeling fresh. We've had a few days rest as well. Because they were four down, I could bowl that attacking line and length.

"I've been working on more of a wobble [seam delivery] in the nets this week and that came out nice [to bowl Saud Shakeel]. I've spoken to Robbo quite a bit about it because he's unbelievable at it then it's just trial and error in the nets.

"Saud was coming hard at us so I thought I'd try it and it worked."

Ben Duckett's lean series continued.

He had already played a couple of poor shots before being dismissed for 11.

Jordan Cox followed for only four and then the impressive debutant Razaullah dismissed Joe Root in his first over in international cricket.

Pakistan's best partnership was their last between Muhammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali. For England, Josh Tongue took four wickets and Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer three each.

Pakistan have had no glimmer of hope in this series so far but the young quick, Razaullah, today has given the Pakistan fans something. To get Joe Root out in your first Test over. The spell that he's just delivered down the back end of the day was tremendous. He could've easily had two or three more that flicked on the outside edge on a couple of occasions.

But you can't go far away from the batting again. It's continued throughout the whole series. They don't look like they have any confidence. These balls seems to be doing a bit more than in previous seasons. This Pakistan batting line-up are shot in confidence. England have realised that and they're being ruthless.

Razaullah has given Pakistan something to cheer at the start of a day that started in miserable fashion. A torrid tour hit a new low when they fell to 84-7 before lunch.
