Just a single to Duckett from Matt Henry's latest over, and the grey clouds are starting to loom overhead...

Since the 2025-26 Ashes series started, England have lost their first wicket within the first 10 overs in all 11 innings, managing just one 50-run opening partnership in this period (against Australia in Melbourne).

Bethell gets off the mark with a couple.

Again, his IPL stint over the past few months has been a bit of a contentious issue as he played very little for eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and missed the start of the County Championship season for it.

He had a very good year for England despite doing the same last winter, though, so it'll be interesting to see how it all unfolds for him.

It just held up against the slope. Emilio Gay had to play it, had to put the bat there. He'll be disappointed. He's trudged off. It's a good ball and you get those opening the batting.

    Gay c Mitchell b Jamieson 8 (Eng 16-1)

    Gone!

Frustration for Emilio Gay as he falls for eight on his Test debut, after a couple of pleasing boundaries.

Kyle Jamieson finally finds the right length for this pitch and locates the edge, with Daryl Mitchell taking a simple catch at slip.

    Over to you, Jacob Bethell...

  6. Eng 15-0published at 5 overs

Ben Duckett clips a couple off his pads as Matt Henry strays on to leg stump, and a single off the final ball means the batters will swap ends for the first time as they've been dealing in boundaries up until now.

  7. Eng 12-0published at 4 overs

    Careful!

Emilio Gay tries to cut off the back foot but the ball keeps a little low, before he's squared up by Jamieson and trapped on the pad.

There's enough out there for the New Zealand quicks.

Emilio Gay will be delighted by the way he's started. He's played a couple of good shots.

  9. Eng 12-0published at 3.1 overs

Emilio Gay's first boundary was a freebie but the second is a stunner.

Crunched past mid-on for four more!

Most runs for England in the Bazball era:

    1. Joe Root - 4,054 (82 inns)
    2. Harry Brook - 3,178 (60 inns)
    3. Ben Duckett - 2,964 (74 inns)
    4. Ollie Pope - 2,700 (73 inns)
    5. Zak Crawley - 2,499 (79 inns)

England have dropped one of their mainstays in favor of Emilio Gay. Zak Crawley also featured in 43 Test matches during the Bazball era - only Joe Root (47) has played more than him.

  11. Eng 8-0published at 3 overs

Good correction from Matt Henry, as Ben Duckett safely negotiates the rest of the over.

Nice and controlled. Duckett waited for it and punched it through extra cover.

  13. Eng 8-0published at 2.2 overs

    Duckett off the mark.

A glorious straight drive for four as England start positively.

  14. Eng 4-0published at 2 overs

A wayward over from Kyle Jamieson, and I bet Emilio Gay can't believe his luck.

  15. Eng 4-0published at 1.1 overs

    Full toss, smashed for four!

Lord's breathes a huge sigh of relief along with Emilio Gay.

Ben Duckett has taken the first ball in only seven previous Test innings - he's been number two in 70. Of those seven innings when Duckett has taken strike, just once was alongside Zak Crawley.

A maiden to start from the ever-reliable Matt Henry.

I don't think much work is being done by those at Emilio Gay's first club, Bedford Cricket Club this morning, as we're all listening in to follow Emilio's debut! Fingers crossed the weather plays ball. Wishing Emilio all the best.

    The lesser-spotted Ben Duckett leave.

All eyes on Emilio Gay, who goes through some shadow batting drills on the sidelines before jogging behind Ben Duckett out to the middle where the sun is shining.

But it is Duckett who will face the first ball from Matt Henry.

    Let's get going.
