It's been a mixed bag of a day for players named in the England Test squad but one who was overlooked, Sam Cook, was on the winning side, took 4-19 as Essex bowled out Leicestershire for 60 and won by seven wickets.

Sonny Baker underlined his potential by taking 5-45 for Hampshire against reigning champions Notts, but Jamie Smith failed twice as Surrey had to follow-on at Headingley.

Harry Brook took three of the wickets to fall in Surrey's second innings after starting the game with only nine to his credit in first-class cricket.

We will be back tomorrow for the final day in our eight remaining games, with the prospect of Ben Stokes batting at Beckenham if the pitch has dried out. Join us at 10:30 for full coverage.

  3. Close of play at Bristolpublished at 19:18 BST 17 May

    Northants 144-5 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Three slips in for Harry Conway as he takes guard to Will Williams.

A big forward lunge to defend. He steers one to Craig Miles at backward point and wisely does not take the run.

Now then... We're off for bad light, apparently without a light meter reading and with the floodlights on, but yet to take effect.

They were only switched on a few minutes ago.

Madness once again. Makes Eurovision humdrum by comparison.

Close of play. Northants need 105. Gloucestershire need five wickets.

We all need a better weather forecast.

Crucial strike from Craig Miles to remove James Sales before the close - he made 28 and added 67 with Nathan McSweeney, who survives on 41.

    Northants 144-5 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Three slips in for Harry Conway, who can leave his first ball down the leg side.

He gets a single off his third ball and there are two left in the over.

    Nathan McSweeney survives.

The floodlights are on and will take effect by the time these last two overs are bowled!

    Sales c Bancroft b Miles 28 (Northants 143-5 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs)

Three overs left and it should be noted the sunshine has gone and the floodlights are off.

Out! James Sales has turned a leg side ball to Cam Bancroft fielding at leg gully!

    Breakthrough for Craig Miles.

Here comes Harry Conway on night watch duty.

    We've been here before.

  6. Postpublished at 19:07 BST 17 May

    Northants 143-4 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Nathan McSweeney gets another single to leg, this time off Will Williams.

James Sales turns his wrist on a leg side ball and gets one to square leg - and now we have an extra fielder moving up from deep square.

The shadows are lengthening across the field but we will get through these overs tonight in a finely poised game.

Four runs to McSweeney with a thick-edged steer to deep third.

  7. Postpublished at 19:03 BST 17 May

    Northants 137-4 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Nathan McSweeney is forward to Craig Miles, defending into the off side.

A leg stump ball is turned away for one. He's on 36.

Leg side again and Gabe Bell stops the ball at deep fine leg.

    Two leg byes.

    Four overs left tonight.

  8. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 19:03 BST 17 May

    Yorkshire 486 v Surrey 204 & 83-5 (f/o)

There will be no resumption at Headingley after rain forced the players off, so Surrey will face the task of batting for a draw on the final day after having to follow on.

They are 199 behind and will be grateful to still have the reassuring presence of Dom Sibley at the crease on 33 not out.

The big surprise of the day was a spell of 3-11 from Harry Brook, which included the wicket of England team-mate Jamie Smith for a duck - to go with the four he made in the first innings.

  9. Close of playpublished at 19:00 BST 17 May

    Warks 252 v Glam 360 & 192-5

And with that, the players are sent to the pavilion and the close of play is announced, with six overs left unbowled.

A great day for Glamorgan who will go into the final day with a 300-run lead and five wickets in the can.

Colin Ingram will go for his supper unbeaten on 80.

Glamorgan can also say a big thank you to Ben Kellaway (42) and Sean Dickson (39) for putting them in the driving seat, despite Ethan Bamber's 4-31.

If the weather holds the visitors will fancy their chances of a third win of the season.

How can you say Derbyshire are closing on on victory? You seem to have forgotten Middlesex bowled out Lancashire for 84 last week so don’t write Middlesex off.

    Northants 134-4 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Close! James Sales is nearly castle by Will Williams but that ball swings away late and misses the stumps.

Five overs left and Craig Miles will take over the bowling from the Ashley Down road End.

  12. Glamorgan lead reaches 300published at 18:55 BST 17 May

    Warks 252 v Glam 360 & 192-5

The floodlights begin to flicker on at Edgbaston as we approach 19:00.

Chris Cooke tucks Oliver Hannon-Dalby into the onside and eases through for a single which takes the Glamorgan lead to the 300 mark.

Really sensible batting from the visitors.

    Hudson-Prentice c Abell b Gregory 12 (Somerset 526-8 dec v Sussex 236-8)

Lewis Gregory strikes with the first ball of the last over - and Sussex close Day Three eight down! Back of a length.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice tries to withdraw his bat, but he's nicked it waist high to Tom Abell at first slip.

Sussex lose 5-32 after that Dan Hughes century and the visitors trail by a daunting 290.

James Coles survives on 12 not out.

Colin Ingram and then Chris Cooke play out successive overs as they perhaps look to see out the day.

Credit to the Bears bowling. They haven't let Glamorgan get away despite the match position.

Seven overs left in the day if the light allows.

    Northants 132-4 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

An edge from James Sales, but soft hands and that ball runs away wide of slip for four.

Frustration for Will Williams, now in his 10th over of the innings.

    Two overs left tonight.

    Northants 128-4 - target - 249 to beat Gloucs

Left-arm spinner Graeme Van Buuren is in the attack now and a late cut from Nathan McSweeney sends the ball skimming through backward point for four runs.

Matt Taylor continues at the other end, squaring up and beating James Sales outside off stump.

Sales nudges a ball to long leg for a single.

McSweeney is across his stumps and survives an LBW shout.

The ball runs away for four leg byes. That's the 50 partnership and the halfway mark of the target is passed.

  18. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Headingleypublished at 18:45 BST 17 May

    Yorkshire v Surrey 83-5 f/o - trail by 199

We are off for rain once more at Headingley - and that could well be that for the day.

What a wonderfully entertaining day it has been - and for Yorkshire - an importantly enterprising one in which they have picked up 15 wickets on day three.

They bowled Surrey all out for 204 as George Hill picked up four-for before Jonny Bairstow enforced Surrey to follow-on.

That has turned out to be a smart move - and another piece of inspiration from Bairstow in the evening's session was deciding to turn to England's newest seam bowler - Harry Brook!

Brook took 3-11, including a double-wicket maiden in which he prized Ryan Patel and then bowled England team-mate Jamie Smith. We're sure that will be mentioned once or twice when the pair are back on Test duty next month.

It has not been confirmed yet that that it is indeed stumps, but once it has been, we will let you know.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:44 BST 17 May

    Dickson lbw b Barnard 39 (Warks 252 v Glam 360 & 188-5)

    Six and out!

Sean Dickson finds some sweet timing to chip Ed Barnard back over long on and into the pavilion for yet another six.

Next ball, Barnard finally gets his wicket as he traps Dickson bang in front of middle and off.

He doesn't hang around for the verdict. When you know, you know.

A patient innings comes to an end.

Chris Cooke joins Colin Ingram (77)

  20. Postpublished at 18:41 BST 17 May

    Somerset 526-8 dec v Sussex 226-7

Sussex are very much in survival mode tonight. A maiden over from Migael Pretorius, who has an appeal for caught behind turned down.

    Fynn Hudson-Prentice survives.

Lewis Gregory has an LBW shout against James Coles turned down, possibly with the ball doing a bit too much and passing leg.

Coles gets through the over with a very tight leave. The ball misses the stumps by a coat of varnish and Gregory is on his haunches in despair.

    Four overs left tonight.
