  2. Stumps on day onepublished at 15:58 GMT

A thrilling day's action comes to a close.

At lunch, we thought South Africa were going to set an enormous score at 140-0.

From 205-1, they've been bowled out for 329 and that run included a big seventh-wicket partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen. But four quick wickets with the new ball from Mitchell Starc handed the hosts a second batting collapse of the day.

    An excellent day's play.

  3. wicket

South Africa all out for 329published at 82.3 overs

    Rabada lbw b Starc 0 (SA 329)

Mitchell Starc cleans up South Africa's lower order. Kagiso Rabada was nowhere near that ball and is trapped plumb in front of the stumps.

South Africa all out for 329 and can thank Mitchell Starc who ends with figures of 6-72.

A thrilling day's cricket so far. Given how late we are in the day, that could well be stumps.

  4. South Africa reviewpublished at 82.3 overs

    SA 329-9

Mitchell Starc thinks he's got Kagiso Rabada lbw after two balls!

It is given, but Rabda immediately reviews. It feels like a very optimistic review.

  5. SA 329-9published at 82.2 overs

    Harmer 0, Rabada 0

Mitchell Starc beats the bat of Kagiso Rabada, but not a delivery that looked close to removing him for a Test hat-trick.

  6. wicket

    Breaking

    Coetzee b Starc 0 (SA 329-9)

Mitchell Starc has a 20th five-wicket haul in Test cricket!

Gerald Coetzee trudges back to the pavilion for a golden duck as Starc takes a third wicket in his last four deliveries. The latest of thoe completely beat Coetzee for pace before clobbering into the leg stump.

Kagiso Rabada is the last man in and Starc is on a hat-trick.

  7. SA 329-8published at 82 overs

    Harmer 0, Coetzee 0

A bit of a scattergun set of deliveries from Pat Cummins, who gifts South Africa a wide and extra delivery. Some good stuff in there too.

The wide is the only run conceded in the over. Cummins has figures of 0-73 from 18 overs.

  8. SA 328-8published at 81 overs

    Harmer 0, Coetzee 0

Two new batters now at the crease in Simon Hamer and Gerald Coetzee. For South Africa, this is far from ideal this late in the day and with a ball just one over old.

Australia captain Pat Cummins brings himself back on to bowl at the other end and partner Mitchell Starc.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 81 overs
    Breaking

    Jansen b Starc 52 (SA 328-8)

Mitchell Starc loves a new ball!

Some late swing on offer from the left-hander, who has taken apart both members of that set partnership in three deliveries.

He beats the bat of Marco Jensen before the ball clips the bottom of his off stump. Sensational bowling and a superb over for Starc.

Another momentum swing in this excellent day of Test cricket.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 80.4 overs
    Breaking

    Rickelton lbw b Starc 42 (SA 327-7)

Absolutely plumb. Mitchell Starc strikes again!

It has only taken Starc four deliveries to get the new ball talking.

There's a bit of swing and it completely traps Ryan Rickelton, who does not bother reviewing. He walks on 42.

  11. new ball

Australia take the new ballpublished at 80.1 overs

    SA 326-6

No surprise. Australia immediately take up the option of the new ball.

Mitchell Starc back into the attack after a lengthy break, with Ryan Rickelton taking a single off his first delivery.

  12. SA 325-6published at 80 overs

    Rickelton 41, Jansen 51

A nice tidy over from Nathan Lyon takes us to the 80-over mark. Just one single from Ryan Rickelton for the scorers to worry about.

The new ball is now available. One would suspect it is taken imminently.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Marco Jansenpublished at 79 overs

    SA 324-6

Marco Jansen ends the 79th over with a ferocious shot for four to pass 50.

It is a seventh Test half-century for the towering Jansen. He smashes a shorter ball from Cooper Connolly over mid-wicket and to the rope.

This partnership with Ryan Rickelton is now at 92.

  14. SA 315-6published at 78 overs

    Rickelton 38, Jansen 44

Two overs to go until this new ball becomes available. Australia captain Pat Cummins is undoubtedly awaiting it with every passing delivery.

Australia will certainly hope South Africa are not just six down at close of play today.

  15. SA 313-6published at 77 overs

    Rickelton 37, Jansen 43

Like a metronome, South Africa are just rotating the strike and playing calm shots that are piling the singles onto the total.

Five of them come in that over, with Marco Jansen now into the 40s.

  16. SA 308-6published at 76 overs

    Rickelton 35, Jansen 40

Pictures a moment ago show Michael Neser and Scott Boland, who both missed out on Australia's team for this one, helping to decide which new ball Australia will take in a few overs time.

In spells where Australia have toiled in the field today, you do wonder whether Boland could have made the difference.

A single apiece for South Africa's batters in that latest Nathan Lyon over.

  17. SA 306-6published at 75 overs

    Rickelton 34, Jansen 39

This is only the second time where Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen have batted as a partnership in Test cricket.

The last was an 86-run partnership at Cape Town against Pakistan in January 2025.

Four runs from the over takes this current stand to 74 without loss.

  18. SA 302-6published at 74 overs

    Rickelton 33, Jansen 36

In the same way as Aiden Markram did earlier, Ryan Rickelton is playing good anchoring role. Protecting his wicket, but also sticking about so that Marco Jansen has license to play some shots.

A maiden over from the experienced Nathan Lyon, but one where Rickelton showed control and patience too.

  19. SA 302-6published at 73 overs

    Rickelton 33, Jansen 36

South Africa pass the 300 mark and in some style too.

Marco Jansen is a very capable bat to come in at number eight. He beautifully clips the ball over the fielder at mid-wicket for four.

This partnership is now at 70 runs from 98 deliveries.

Nathan Lyon will replace Matt Renshaw.

  20. SA 297-6published at 72 overs

    Rickelton 32, Jansen 32

Both Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen are at 32 not out.

Those converted into 50s, possibly more, would do South Africa a world of good right now.

Cooper Connolly replaces Josh Hazlewood for another dose of spin.
