The forecast might not be encouraging, but we'll still be back for every ball of this game across Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, whenever they are bowled.

  2. Close of play at the Ovalpublished at 18:41 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

    An extraordinary day is over.

Anyone looking at the lime green track and the blankets of cloud over the Oval this morning would have expected a low-scoring match with the potential for 15+ wickets falling in the day, much like we've seen elsewhere in London in recent days.

This was anything but. Hampshire won the toss and chose to bowl first, but though the scoring was slow in the opening hour, Dom Sibley stood firm for his 39 through the morning session.

When he departed at 98-3 early in the afternoon you thought Hampshire might get their tails up, instead Dan Lawrence and Ollie Pope produced an extraordinary stand of 255 in 37 overs, breaking a club record for the fourth wicket against Hampshire set in 1948.

Fresh from an unbeaten 94 from 47 balls in the T20 between the sides here on Friday night, Lawrence brought up his fourth first class century of the summer, then a new career-best, then a maiden double century from just 172 balls, second only to Kevin Pietersen in Surrey history.

He eventually holed-out for 218 in the madness as the visitors prised out the final six Surrey wickets for just 31 runs as the hosts yet again fell short of maximum batting points.

Hampshire had an awkward 11-over mini-session to face, but they didn't quite make it halfway through before bad light stopped play.

With a poor forecast for Monday and iffy beyond that, Surrey might feel they've potentially left some points out there, while Hampshire will just be relieved the day is over and they were able to rally when they did to claim three bowling points.

  3. Bad light stops play at the Ovalpublished at 18:32 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

We're heading off for bad light.

5.4 overs remain in the day, but the hopes of a return look slim, if we're honest.

  4. Postpublished at 18:32 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

Tom Curran slings one down a leg side which Toby Albert follows without getting a touch and Ollie Pope sprawls to stop.

Another umpire conflab coming up.... this might be it...

  5. Postpublished at 18:30 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

We continue, for now, in the gathering gloom, with Matt Fisher sending down his third over.

Nick Gubbins clips off his hip for a single off the fourth delivery to bring Toby Albert back onto strike and he prods a single to complete the over into the off side to move onto 14*.

Six overs remain, in theory, light permitting.

  6. Postpublished at 18:26 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 15-0

Toby Albert cuts Tom Curran's short first ball of his second over away to the point boundary for the first of the Hampshire innings.

The second ball takes a very low bounce indeed as Albert avoids it and Ollie Pope has to scramble to his right to corral it.

Another quick two takes Hampshire into double figures and Albert them does so himself as he edges past the slips for his second boundary.

The umpires have a brief chat at the end of the over, presumably about the failing light.

  7. Postpublished at 18:22 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 5-0

Toby Albert gets a couple from Matt Fisher's second ball, with Reece Topley saving a couple of runs with a timely stop.

Dan Lawrence is off the field after his heroics with the bat, by the way, Adam Thomas is his replacement and is fielding at gully.

The floodlights are on and it's pretty gloomy in Kennington once again.

Albert scampers a quick single with Nick Gubbins just about beating Reece Topley's throw from point.

  8. Postpublished at 18:18 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 2-0

Nick Gubbins gets off the mark with a clip off his hips from the third delivery for a couple to the deep square region.

The final ball from Tom Curran shoots through Gubbins' forward defence but flies past off stump and is well snaffled by Ollie Pope with the gloves.

  9. Postpublished at 18:14 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 0-0

Toby Albert sees out a maiden opening over from Matt Fisher, who nags away at about sixth stump but can't quite get his length right.

Who will get the fresh cherry from the other end?

    It's Tom Curran...

  10. Hampshire begin replypublished at 18:11 BST

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 0-0

Matt Fisher takes the new ball for Surrey with Nick Gubbins and Toby Albert in the middle for the visitors, with 11 tricky overs to negotiate.

Albert is on strike, and Ollie Pope is keeping wicket.

    Perfectly normal day, this.

And just like that, it's all over.

The final six wickets fell for the addition of just 31 runs.

Reece Topley flashes a drive at Kyle Abbott and offers Jake Lehmann a routine catch at third slip.

Hampshire will face a nervy mini-session in the middle before stumps.

    Lawrence c Organ b Baker 218 (Surrey 418-9 v Hampshire

    It's over.

Dan Lawrence holes out for a career-best 218 from 190 balls, featuring 31 fours and five sixes, mistiming again off Sonny Baker for Felix Organ to take a towering catch at mid-on.

Lawrence has hit 312 runs from 237 balls on this ground for Surrey against Hampshire across two formats in the space of 47 hours.

A truly special performance, and he heads off the field with Hampshire players rushing to pat him on the back.

Surrey have lost 5-28 and Reece Topley is the final man in.

Surrey's quest for maximum batting points for the first time this season might fall short, against all the odds, it would appear.

  13. Postpublished at 17:57 BST

    Surrey 418-8 v Hampshire

Dan Lawrence is going to hit out for 450, but to get there he'll need to get bat on ball...

He takes a couple of huge hacks in Sonny Baker's first three balls before letting the fourth ball slide by as it shapes away.

Lawrence gets his bat on the fifth ball, skewing it over the covers as he tries to play into the leg side and the ball beats the despairing dive of the fielder to the rope for Lawrence's 31st four.

  14. Postpublished at 17:52 BST

    Surrey 414-8 v Hampshire

Inches away from another for Kyle Abbott as James Taylor drives and flashes an edge just beyond the despairing dive of third slip.

Dan Lawrence is back on strike. Will he hit out for this 450 bonus point?

Sonny Baker will take the fresh cherry from the Vauxhall End.

    Clark c Brown b Abbott 8 (Surrey 410-7 v Hampshire)

In his 20th over, Kyle Abbott has his first wicket. The new ball has done its trick.

Abbott gets one to straighten up on Jordan Clark who comes forward in defence and edges through to keeper Ben Brown.

That's 20-3 for Hampshire, though Dan Lawrence remains in situ.

Matt Fisher is the new man in the middle.

Lovely straight drive down the ground from Jordan Clark brings him his first boundary off Delano Potgieter, timed to perfection and straight as an arrow.

A single brings Dan Lawrence onto strike on 212*.

He keeps strike with a single off the final ball and will face a new ball after 80 overs, with Kyle Abbott taking it from the Pavilion End.

It feels a little bit of a different game since Ollie Pope was dismissed.

There's plenty of time left in the day for Hampshire to have a bat today.

it depends how long it takes Surrey to get to 450.

    Surrey 400-6 v Hampshire

Jordan Clark gets off the mark with a glance into the leg side off Delano Potgieter for a single which brings up a fourth batting point.

Hampshire have two bowling points and need three more wickets for the third, Surrey need 50 more runs for a fifth batting point with 18 overs and change remaining on day one.

He gets one to nip back at Tom Curran who drives straight and is thumped infront.

Lovely ball and the South African has had a rollercoaster day for his 3-74.

Jordan Clark is the new batter. One run shy of a fourth batting point.

The new ball is less than three overs away.
