Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was taken to hospital to be treated for a neck injury after being hurt during an NFL game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
Campbell's head was struck while tackling tight end TJ Hockenson in the fourth quarter, and he was face down on the pitch when medical officials rushed to his side.
The 26-year-old was placed on a stretcher and taken off the pitch on a cart to a round of applause after team-mates and most of the Lions coaching staff surrounded him while he received attention.
The Lions confirmed Campbell was transported to hospital, where he would remain overnight.
"Jack Campbell is resting and will remain in a local hospital tonight, for continued evaluation and monitoring," a Lions statement said.
"The team will provide further updates as we have them."
Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who is no relation to Jack, said the whole club were "thinking about" the linebacker.
"Thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family. He's being taken care of, we don't have any new information," said Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
Jack Campbell was drafted by the Lions with the number 18 overall pick in 2023 and signed a contract extension in May of this year through to the 2030 season.
Last season, he was an All-Pro selection after becoming the first NFL player in seven years to have 150-plus tackles and at least five sacks and three forced fumbles.
The Lions won Sunday's game 19-15, with Campbell's team-mates DJ Wonnum and Brian Branch both suffering concussions.
