This team finished 3rd last season. If the players pull themselves together they will easily avoid relegation. It’s whether the player are willing to fight or if want a way out.

    Brett, Cambridge

Get a grip. Its nine games in. Anything could happen.

    Jon, Peterborough

Abysmal start to the season for Man U but it all makes sense when you look at the lack of effort, lack of pressing. Carrick admitted that he wanted the team sitting back. Against Chelsea, they actually pressed and played well. Play like that every week, they'll finish top half.

Scary times as a Utd fan...and Halloween is over! The squad isnt good enough - You have to ask yourself, how many of them would get in other teams in the Premier League? We used to get the elite, now we're buying players that cant get in the Chelsea team!

    Neil, Jersey

Man Utd were last demoted in 1973 only 5 years after winning the European Cup in 1968. I remember it. The feeling of helplessness to stop the rot, whilst feeling entitled to be in the top division has echoes of current times (the last few years I would say).

    Nick, Wells

Utd have players who definitely consider themselves too good for the Championship, but as a team they’re not good enough for the Premier League.

Michael Carrick saying Manchester United had trained well ahead of games they have gone on to lose or draw has become something of a parody.

But there was tangible evidence of it at Carrington this morning.

Cameras are only allowed in for the first 15 minutes of training the day before Champions League games.

However, there was plenty of joviality in the rondos session, with Bryan Mbeumo, Carlos Baleba and Bruno Fernandes all pretty vocal.

United did play with focus and determination in the first half at Chelsea, which suggested there is some togetherness, but their confidence is exceptionally fragile.

There are no easy games in the Premier League like there used to be. There is no game at the moment that United look like winning. They aren't missing major injuries and the coach is doing the best he can with what he's been given. Relegation is a real possibility.

According to Opta's supercomputer, Manchester United certainly aren't too good to go down.

They are by no means the favourites to face the drop, but the supercomputer has given them a 22.96% chance of playing in the Championship next season.

The current bottom three are all given a higher percentage probability than Michael Carrick's side while Hull City(29.5%), Coventry City (37.2%), Ipswich Town (24.52%) and Fulham (23.56%) - all of whom currently sit above the Red Devils in the table, have all been given a greater chance of relegation.

Being a fan of this club for almost 40 years has made me experience some amazing highs and some lows (mainly pre and post Fergie). There is no easy solution now, but the main course of action simply has to be letting Carrick go (with thanks) and firing the directors.

    Tim, Ruislip

I don't think Carrick can manage a Premier League squad, hence why they are going down to the Championship, I think they are better than Coventry and Crystal Palace but noone else

  13. United being relegated 'certainly possible' - Ten Hagpublished at 13:05 GMT

Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag believes it is "certainly possible" that United are relegated from the Premier League this season.

Sat 17th in the table, Man United are just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

"In the Premier League it's certainly possible, because all the teams are simply strong," Ten Hag told ESPN.

"They're all strong squads, all good managers. And if you end up on the wrong side once and you really get into that vicious circle -- yes, then it can become very, very difficult."

Utd too good to down?! I wouldn't put the words Utd and good together. They are bang in trouble and are struggling to get out of the cycle they're in. If the players fancy putting a bit of effort in, they may just sneak survival.

    Ryan, Lancs

Too good to go down? Is this a joke? I'm a United fan but if they are not careful they will go down. And if the players don't put 100% in then it will happen. They're yet to play at 100% effort for 90 minutes yet. Shambles of a team.

    Jason, Welwyn Garden City

At the moment it’s really difficult to see where a United win is going to come from and that is a huge concern. The players seem bereft of any confidence and unity. At present I don’t think there are 3 worse teams in the Premier League.

We may only be nine games into the Premier League season, but Man United sit just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

No decision has been made yet to sack Michael Carrick, with supporters directing most of their anger towards the players and the board.

But are Manchester United too good to go down?

Leicester City won the Premier League and are now in League One. Tottenham also narrowly avoided relegation last season.

United may continue to struggle with this squad, but are there three teams worse than them?

  17. Are Man Utd in relegation trouble?published at 12:45 GMT

Man United are nine games without a win in all competitions. It is their worst run since 1988-89.

They are teetering on the brink of dropping into the relegation zone for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's early days and on Tuesday welcome Serie A outfit Roma to Old Trafford knowing they need a win to keep their Champions League qualification hopes realistic.

Pre-match, the expectation had been Michael Carrick would be in charge for that.

"There's no words I'm going to explain to you now that makes any difference," he said. "It's not going to change it. We've got to move forward and win football matches, it's as simple as that.

"The way they went about it and played, the quality of football and the way we played in the first half definitely gives encouragement, and we've got to take that."

  18. Will Tuesday provide a springboard or more misery?published at 12:40 GMT

Man Utd v Roma (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

Well, in a literal sense, they get a break from the Premier League and instead face Italian side Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

It hasn't been going much better for Michael Carrick's side in Europe with one win and two defeats in three games so far, including the 4-1 humbling by Como last time out.

The beauty of the league phase is that things can change quickly and a positive result on Tuesday night could prove a springboard for not only their Champions League journey but for their season as a whole.

It wont be an easy task, however, as visiting Roma have lost just once in all competitions so far this season.

They remain unbeaten in Serie A and after a 5-2 victory against Udinese on Saturday, will fancy their chances at implementing more misery on the wounded Red Devils.

Saturday's defeat by Chelsea means Manchester United sit 17th in the Premier League table after nine games played.

Michael Carrick's side are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference and just two points off rock bottom side, Sunderland.

There have been struggles in the red half of Manchester in recent seasons but this may be the bleakest it has looked yet.

So, where do they go from here?
