So we want to know how you are coping - with our Wheel of Fortune! Help playing audio/video Farmers never mind a bit of rain. But our research shows that while some rural businesses are benefiting, others are suffering. Meat, for instance, is selling well, partly because the Euro is strong against the Pound. For once, Irish Beef costs buyers more than British. And the French are loving Somerset lamb. But Dairy farmers have been hit, once again, as the price of milk has been cut. Why? Well in a recession, curiously enough, global demand for milk does fall. It’s not that people stop pouring milk on their corn flakes, more that demand falls for ice cream and whey products on the global markets. So as Somerset gathers for the annual showcase of all that’s best in food and farming, we are trying to find out whose business is booming, and who is finding it heavy weather. ![]() Farmer Nick Hill We've set up a Wall of Fortune at the Royal Bath & West Show. It is a simple idea; we take your picture, and then ask you to choose the economic weather that fits your business. I'll be at the show, talking to chutney makers and cheddar men, strawberry growers and cider lovers. Who’s up, Who’s Down? Come to the Wall, and find your Fortune! If you cannot get to the showground, we'll be updating this page regularly with stories and pictures of Somerset’s biggest village party. And why not send us a picture that tells your story? somerset@bbc.co.uk last updated: 27/05/2009 at 14:44 Have Your SayYou are in: Somerset > Places > Places features > The Wall of Fortune |
