My Memorable Day
Linda Boyle
2001
It was Tuesday 1st May 2001 and I was on the beautiful Island of Arran off the west coast of Scotland. I had rented a cottage near Whiting Bay for ten days and couldn't believe how lucky I was with the weather. Blue skies, white fluffy clouds and temperatures around 20c.
I had been coming to Arran first as a child with my parents and then bringing my own children as it was a haven for families. Arran is Scotland in miniature and its highest peak is Goat Fell, a very popular climb of 2,867 ft (864m), a Corbett I believe. It even has the notorious history of being the place where an alleged murder took place in July 1889.
I was happy with my own company and these few days were for me to charge batteries in surroundings where I felt so relaxed at peace. My marriage was over and at the age of 57 I had been on my own for 6 years with a full time job to pay the mortgage on my wee flat.
I made the decision that day to climb Goat Fell fairly confident that I should be fit enough although not really aware exactly what was in store. I was a little nervous because I was alone but I soon shrugged that off and as I began to leave behind the grounds of Brodick Castle I had a feeling of exhilaration and excitement I must admit - I was stepping to unknown territory but just had to do it!
I remember meeting a few others on their way down as I approached the summit and they gave me that extra encouragement I definitely needed and pointed out the best way up on the last steep incline. I was tired but I will never forget the feeling when I took that last step onto the top and stood looking down at the Firth of Clyde and the most fabulous scenery I could ever wish to see. That was such a special moment and one I'll never forget.
The descent had to be careful as my leg muscles were crying out a bit and knew a slip or fall was something to avoid but I was so proud of myself when I at last returned to the lower slopes after 5+ hours - I wanted to shout to everyone - I wanted a band to be playing - I should be given a medal - I had climbed Goat Fell on my own and I felt wonderful!
A most memorable and extraordinary day!
