Fleeing from Home

Anonymous

I remember it being midway into the summer hols, the day me and my two elder sisters ran out of our house in fear of our Mother. It was building up to this for the last several days, the tense feeling since our Mum had gotten ill again. But it was on this day that we were so frightened that we had to leave the house we use to be so safe in, as we were scared of what would happened if we stayed there.

The day itself began peacefully if filled with a nauseous, stomach tightening fear is all I can say on my part I don't know how my sister, Carrie who shared the bedroom with me was feeling at the time. We hadn't good night's sleep in ages as when Mum was ill with her mental illness she would stay up till the wee hours of the morning playing her music loudly! To this day hearing Suspicious Minds by Elvis leaves me a bit queasy. We were both too petrified to leave our room in case we were seen by Mum who left the living room door wide open so she could see who was coming and going from her chair positioned next to the door.

We amused ourselves by watching our video collection of Simpson's episodes, telling jokes and other stuff to keep our minds active and to ignore whatever happened outside of our room, Carrie decided to check if we could go out of our room as I had began to need really badly the lav but was too afraid to leave the room. All was clear for us to go as Mum was not at her usual position, so we quickly went to the bathroom trying to be quiet as we could. My Dad and David, my brother had both left the house, my Dad had went to his old army veteran's club to escape from Mum. While my brother had left after getting into a very loud argument with her, so it was just me, Carrie and my eldest sister Emily left in the house with Mum.

Carrie and I went into David's room to play on his play station to have a go of his discworld game. Carrie was the one who was playing I did my usual watch and cheer routine, this went on for a hour or so, but soon we heard Mum shouting at Emily for screwing up on a little thing in the shopping, Mum when ill would make my older sister go on a dozen or so trips to the shops for things that were trivial and stuff she normally didn't like. The light mood we had managed to make soon deflating from hearing our Mother's shrill voice.

Not long after that Mum burst into the room and said something that was absolutely bone chilling at the time in that scary shrill voice she got at the time 'you think I'm the crazy one but you're the crazy ones' now I find that funny but then it was a different matter it left me shaking in fear.

Carrie turned the play station off and said we were leaving as we couldn't stay here with Mum like this; I followed her to Emily's door and watched as she knocked on the door. Emily opened up and Carrie walked quickly in and I jump into the room as well, Emily shut the door so mum couldn't hear us ' we're hightailing it out of here are you coming or not cause we are going either way' Carrie stating clearly to Emily. It didn't take long for her to say yes to this question, I was by this time a trembling, stuttering mess from all that was happening, both my sister had to try their best to calm me down so that we could get ready for our flit from the house.

Packing up our backpacks with a few necessary things, we also gathered up enough money to use as bus fare. This was mostly done by the other two as I was still too scared to be of any use. So both Emily and Carrie finally had to each take one of my arms and direct me to the top of the landing, quietly of course, we didn't want Mum to know about our running away. We must have not been quiet enough as we soon could hear 'where do you think you're going?' It was either Emily or Carrie that yelled to run, anyway I soon broke into a fast trot after being in an almost catatonic state earlier! I was nearly like a frightened horse as me, Emily and Carrie ran round the back to the back garden gate and across the park to the bus stop at Harley Gardens at a furious speed.

We took a bus to the top of Glasgow city centre. We had planned to stay at a hostel where the students and backpackers stayed. Carrie was made the spokesperson to see what the arrangement was. It turns out it would have cost us £25 to stay there, which was a little out of our price range. So we thought we could ask Dad for the money and headed off to the Balaclava club to see if he was still there.

We walked over there, we found Dad at the bar having a drink with some mates. I'm sure we look a right state to him. Carrie told him everything about Mum's behaviour and of our flit. Dad said he would arrange something so that we didn't have to go home that night.

We had a drink of juice and a packet of crisp to ease our nerves. Dad came over with Uncle Billy and told us we would be staying with him and Auntie Amy. So we took a bus to Cumbernauld and went to the house with Uncle Billy, we ate Chinese and slept peacefully.
