Following the Path of the Rose

What does it mean to walk in Mary Magdalene’s footsteps today?

Saint, Sinner, Freedom Fighter, Leader, Follower, Symbol of the Divine Feminine… Mary Magdalene is one of the most controversial and significant figures in Christian history. But what does it mean to walk in her footsteps today? In this episode of the BBC’s Heart and Soul, I, Natasha Serlin, embark on a personal journey to connect with her legacy and explore how it resonates with me, here, now, today.
I trace her path through Southern France, beginning at the spot where she is believed to have first arrived: Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, and continuing to the cave of Saint Baume where she is said to have spent the final 30 years of her life. As I walk, I’ll be conscious of her presence, imagining her processing the loss of her beloved, enduring exile, and spreading a message of love, healing, empowerment and unity.
For me, this journey has echoes of my own personal struggles: the loss of my mother, a divorce, leaving the family home, and more recently navigating the death of a dear friend. As I follow her footsteps, I am exploring the physical terrain and my own inner landscape - open to whatever revelations may come.
This is not just about Mary Magdalene's story; it is my own pilgrimage. As I seek understanding and wisdom, guided by both her legacy, and my own inner journey. This layered narrative, blending history and myth with personal reflection, offers new insights into Mary Magdalene’s enduring impact on our lives today.
