The Silent Threat

A World War Two shipwreck near the Essex coast hides a deadly secret beneath the waves.

Beneath the waves of the Thames Estuary a World War Two shipwreck hides a deadly secret. The SS Richard Montgomery ran aground and sank near Southend in 1944, taking with it a cargo of an estimated 1,400 tonnes of unexploded munitions.

More than 80 years later, the bombs remain trapped within the wreck and could explode at any moment.
