Emily Wittbrodt and Regan Bowering in session

Jennifer Lucy Allan presents our latest exclusive collaborative session between Emily Wittbrodt and Regan Bowering.

Emily Wittbrodt is a cellist and composer based in Cologne, Germany. Her most recent project, Wearing Words, focused on the pairing of words in English - her second language - with melodic shapes composed on the cello weeks previously. These pairings were then brought to life by opera singer Sandro Hähnel, written in Emily’s higher vocal range to give the finished piece a ‘genderless’ quality. These tracks were then furnished with “flurries of improvisation”.

Regan Bowering is a percussionist and composer based in London whose practices focus on various microphone and amplification techniques to create layered, feedback-laden soundworlds using her drumkit. Regan’s work plays with - and responds directly to - space. It’s an approach much in evidence in her most recent project, A Technology of Feeling, where material recorded in a controlled studio environment is brought together with sounds gathered at Boston Waterworks Festival, where she utilised “the cavernous acoustics of [an] old water pump station” to reveal “timbral nuances and tactile detail”.

Elsewhere in the show: hip hop-rooted catharsis from the ongoing collaboration between the duo Saint Abdullah and producer Eomac; instrumentals from the vaults courtesy of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Yellow Magic Orchestra; and a triumphant return in the form of songwriter and accordionist Baby Dee’s first album in eleven years.
