Industrial memories and free-wheeling jazz

Verity Sharp shares sounds and words from Abandon Normal Devices, a nomadic, site-specific experimental multimedia festival that is held in Barnsley at the end of September. Among the highlights are a newly commissioned work from Berlin-based 4D spatial sound collective MONOM (excavating the acoustic memory of Barnsley's industrial past) as well as an extract from Egyptian electronic producer ZULI, who has scored a film documenting the shifting landscapes of the Nile Delta.

Elsewhere in the programme: a resurfaced recording from “afro nu-wave muzic” outfit Jon Waine: free-wheeling spiritual jazz courtesy of Finnish group Fågelbörs; and occult music from Thorn Wych, made on instruments carved from the branches of a tree.
