Elena Urioste and Tom Poster live at Wigmore Hall

Linton Stephens showcases superb performances from the UK and beyond.

The Music is Black. As part of the BBC’s collaboration with the V&A East Museum exhibition, Radio 3 is celebrating the music of Black British composers and artists across the week. A specially commissioned new work inspired by the exhibition, "On the Shoulder of Aunties and Uncles", composed by Segun Akinola and recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, will be premiered and showcased throughout the week, alongside other great music from Black British composers and favourite classical tracks performed by Black British artists.

Our week on Classical Live begins with a live concert from Wigmore Hall in London, where violinist Elena Urioste and pianist Tom Poster perform sonatas by Dora Pejačević and Johannes Brahms, as well as a lilting nocturne by Dvorak.

We’ll also be paying visits to festivals in Denmark and Switzerland this week – today you can hear a song-cycle by Beethoven and cello meditations by Leonard Bernstein. There will be contributions from the BBC orchestras throughout the week, too – Samantha Ege joins the BBC Philharmonic for a performance of Avril Coleridge-Taylor’s Piano Concerto at 2pm, and George Jackson conducts The Ulster Orchestra in Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony to end the programme. And we’ll also be hearing from Radio 3’s current New Generation Baroque Ensemble – The Bellot Ensemble – with highlights from their recent studio recording.
