Ryan Jones: Unbreakable

Rugby icon Ryan Jones shares his journey from Grand Slam glory to an early-onset dementia diagnosis in an inspiring story of resilience, family and determination.

Ryan Jones MBE is a three-time Grand Slam winner, British & Irish Lion and captain of Wales on 33 occasions. He reached the pinnacle of international rugby through talent and determination. Yet now that resilience is being tested by a devastating diagnosis - Ryan has early onset dementia which he believes is a result of his rugby career.

Ryan Jones: Unbreakable is an intimate, emotional and inspiring documentary that follows one of Wales's greatest sporting heroes as he confronts the toughest challenge of his life. Told largely in Ryan's own words, the film charts a journey from childhood dreams and sporting success to personal struggles with depression, injury and his current health status.

Born in Newport and raised in a supportive family that encouraged his natural athleticism, Ryan's sporting ambitions initially centred on tennis and then football. As a teenager, he played as a goalkeeper for Bristol City, but after being released from his contract, he took up rugby. What followed was a remarkable career. From his early appearances for Bridgend to becoming a cornerstone of the Ospreys and Welsh national team, Ryan developed into a respected leader.

Through archive footage, personal photographs and candid interviews, the film revisits the defining moments of his career, including his Grand Slam triumphs and some of the unforgettable international battles that made Ryan a household name.

After retiring, Ryan faced periods of depression that left him struggling to cope with the immense pressures of daily life. Behind the image of strength and leadership was a man wrestling with mental health challenges in an environment where vulnerability was rarely discussed. Ryan speaks openly and honestly about those experiences, revealing the emotional cost of a career spent pushing his body and mind to their limits.

The film explores the culture of professional rugby, the sacrifices demanded of players and the difficulties many athletes face when their careers come to an end. Ryan reflects on retirement following a recurring shoulder injury and the loss of identity experienced by many sportspeople when the spotlight fades. His story raises important questions about player welfare and the support available to athletes navigating life after professional sport.

Just as Ryan began adapting to life beyond rugby, another devastating challenge emerged. Diagnosed with early-onset dementia and probable CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, he found himself confronting an uncertain future. Yet rather than retreat from public view, he made the courageous decision to share his experience in the hope of helping others.

At the heart of the documentary is Ryan's determination to keep moving forward and his refusal to be defined by illness. His daily life reveals a man determined to embrace every moment, finding purpose, joy and meaning in the present. It is the story of a man learning to live with uncertainty while refusing to surrender his ambitions, his identity or his optimism.
