Hunting The Spycammers
Jess Davies infiltrates a dark online world where illegal hidden camera footage is shared for likes and trades. Can she get close enough to the spycammers to confront them?
Jess Davies investigates spy cams and discovers a bigger, darker world than she ever expected. She uncovers an online network where secretly filmed footage of people in their most intimate moments, is shared for views, likes and trades. Who’s doing this and how are they getting away with it?
Teaming up with investigative journalist Liam, who has previously infiltrated secretive online networks, Jess goes undercover to track down those behind the cameras. She’s driven by her own experience having discovered a secretly taken photo of her sleeping naked had been shared in a private WhatsApp group. Voyeurism is on the rise in the UK so she’s not alone.
Together they uncover a sprawling voyeur website. A hub that links to encrypted chat groups where illegal, non-consensual footage is shared anonymously, including by users in the UK.
Posing as a new “spycammer” looking for advice, they infiltrate these closed groups from the inside. What they discover is deeply disturbing: perpetrators openly swapping tips on how to secretly film women - including sisters, partners, flatmates and strangers - and boasting about the footage they’ve captured.
Looking into the evolving tech is also eye opening. Hidden cameras are disguised as everyday objects: pens, air fresheners, plug sockets. They’re cheap, easy to buy and almost impossible to spot when planted in bedrooms, bathrooms, changing rooms and public toilets.
As Jess dives deeper into this online world, the stakes rise. She decides to confront the spycammers directly, revealing who she really is. Can she get them to explain how they justify their actions? And can she go further and track down the owner behind the voyeur site where this illegal trade thrives?
