Episode 8

After more than 11,000km across eight countries, the teams face one final test of endurance as they race to claim victory at the finish line in Hatgal, Mongolia.

After racing over 11,000km through Europe and Asia, across the world’s largest continental landmass, the teams face one final test of endurance as they embark on the last leg of their Race Across the World. In a journey of extremes, they have travelled from the sun-soaked streets of Palermo to the icy steppe of northern Mongolia, and now just 950km stand between them and the finish line in Hatgal, where the first team to cross the finish line will claim victory and a £20,000 prize.

To finish the race, teams must head north from Kharkhorin to reach the shores of the ‘Blue Pearl of Mongolia’, Lake Khövsgöl. As they leave the checkpoint, they face a crucial decision. They could head directly north, a shorter route but one which requires them to go off-road. Public transport disappears, forcing teams to rely on their own charm and determination to cross the Khangai Mountains. Alternatively, they can add 500km to their journey with a detour via the capital, Ulaanbaatar, making use of paved roads, buses and the country’s only public rail line. With every team focused on taking home the prize, whichever route they choose, they will need to think smart and move fast to stay ahead of the competition.

Before they depart the checkpoint, two teams take part in one of Mongolia’s oldest rituals, Tsatsal, an offering of milk to the spirits, believed to ensure swift and trouble-free travel. But as they hit the road, some teams may wonder if their calls have been heard. For those with dwindling budgets, earning money becomes essential to keep moving towards the finish line.

As the race draws to a close, the teams all take the time to reflect on their epic adventure, where bonds have deepened and lifelong memories have been made. The race culminates in a dramatic sprint through the snow-covered forests surrounding Hatgal as they search for the book to sign in and discover their fate.

Which pair will triumph and take home the £20,000 prize as the winners of the sixth series of Race Across the World?
