Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Cheung Chau Bun Festival!

Every year competitors in Hong Kong climb a 14-metre bun tower at the stroke of midnight as part of the festival celebrations.

The challenge? To bag as many buns as possible in a three-minute limit. Points are awarded according to the height that the buns are taken.

This year there were twelve competitors, and ice climbing athlete Janet Kung and firefighter Kwok Ka-ming were crowned bun queen and king.

The competition is the climax of Hong Kong's annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival.

It's been held for more than a century, to ward off disaster and pray for peace and safety.

The bun-climb was actually banned in 1978 because the tower collapsed and people were hurt - but, in 2005, it was made safer and the ritual was brought back.

Retrieving a bun from the top of the tower is traditionally believed to bring luck to the climber's family.
