Belgian festival celebrates the humble omelette... with a HUGE one

This festival in Belgium is not YOLKING around...

Yep, thousands of eggs are needed to make this GIANT omelette at the annual festival in the city of Malmedy.

The event attracts tourists from far and wide and locals have been joining in with the tradition for years.

So we want to know, if you had to cook and eat a massive version of something, what would you make?

Perhaps a huge sausage roll? Or a massive ice cream sundae? How about a Yorkshire pudding big enough to sit in?

The volunteers put on their gloves and got cracking - literally.

More than 7,200 eggs were used to make the four-metre-wide omelette.

An omelette this big needs a specially designed frying pan, heated over coals in the town centre.

After sizzling some bacon lardons, the whisked eggs were poured in before chefs with long paddles moved the eggs around to help them cook.

Once they were seasoned and cooked, they were served up alongside crusty bread to the hundreds of visitors.

Julie Oury has been volunteering at the event for decades.

"It is my 20th I think, because I have done it since I was a little baby. It is really a big event, and we have all a lot of fun" she told the APTN.

Mathieu Kelleter, a member of the omelette-making team, says the festival shows how "simple things can bring people together".

"Hopefully the world is going to learn that as well, and we will be able to bring the world together with the little things," he added.
