This year's Fifa World Cup is the biggest one ever to take place.

The tournament was expanded to include 48 teams for the first time in its history, and as a result it will last a record 39 days.

Because there are more teams than ever before, there are also more matches.

A total of 104 games will be played during the tournament - another World Cup record.

It's also the first time in history that the tournament is being hosted by three different nations - the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Most goals ever scored

Football fans have been treated to an absolute goal-fest this summer.

An incredible 215 goals were scored during the group stages - that's an average of three per match.

This already smashes the previous all-time tournament record of 172 goals, which was set at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

And with plenty more matches to come, that total will rise even higher.

Messi's historic hat-trick

Argentina are the current world champions, having won the previous tournament which took place in Qatar in 2022.

But will the South American nation be able to retain the trophy this year?

They got their World Cup off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over Algeria, and it was all thanks to one man - Lionel Messi, of course!

At the age of 38, he claimed his first World Cup hat-trick.

The result also meant that he equalled the record for the most goals scored by any player at a World Cup - with 16 - although he has since gone to score even more!

At 41 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo may be one of the oldest footballers to ever take part in a World Cup, however he is proving that age is just a number.

Six minutes into Portugal's group match with Uzbekistan, he scored in his sixth back-to-back World Cup.

His first goal came as a 21-year-old in the 2006 tournament, before finding the net again in the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The other player to feature in each of those tournaments is Lionel Messi - but he failed to score in 2010.

Kane breaks England goalscoring record

This tournament has seen Harry Kane set a new record for most England goals at a World Cup.

His 11th goal - which he scored against Panama - beat the best of 10, set by former Match of the Day Host Gary Lineker, but Kane has since gone on to score even more.

Kane described the moment he beat the record as a "proud one for sure".

"I never take these moments for granted. Another good milestone to hit, and I hope it is not the last one in this tournament," he added.
