One of the Ironbridge power station cooling towers will be illuminated this weekend - for the last time before they're demolished.

The four towers have stood since 1969, but are due to come down later this year, to allow the site to be cleared for housing.

The illumination is part of the Ironbridge Festival of Imagination, a series of arts events in the gorge which runs until 29 September.

Firefighters have been dealing with a fire that spread from two garden sheds in Wellington to the backs of two homes.

They were called out at 15:09 and it was put out in just under an hour.

Telford Tigers get their new season under way with matches away to Basingstoke Bison and at home to the newly formed Leeds Chiefs.

They finished off their pre-season preparations with a 4-2 win over Swindon Wildcats and head coach Tom Watkins said he was pleased with the way his new players were making an impact.

The forecast for tomorrow is looking good with sunshine and temperatures up to 24C (75F).

But we're expecting some thunderstorms on Sunday.

Two people have been injured in a five-vehicle crash on the westbound A5, just outside Shrewsbury.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called out at 15:33 and one of the patients, a woman who was driving one of the cars, has been taken to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

The other person has suffered minor injuries, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A section of the motorway has been closed after the crash, causing long delays approaching the Preston Island.

A second crash on the westbound M54, near junction seven, is causing delays back to J5 for Telford.

Jeremy Corbyn says he will wave a red flag from the top of the Wrekin if Labour's parliamentary candidate for Telford wins at the next general election.

Conservative Lucy Allan held on to the seat with a majority of 720 in 2017 and Labour have chosen local activist Katrina Gilman as their candidate to oppose her when the country next goes to the polls.

Mr Corbyn grew up in Shropshire and as a young socialist planted a red flag up the hill.

He said Telford was "a wonderful place and a wonderful town and I see it as my political birthplace".

Firefighters were called out to help passengers on the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway yesterday evening, when it got stuck halfway up the hill.

One of them went down to the carriage using a rope, to offer reassurance and others were then able to get the carriage down using the manual release.

The incident happened at around 18:40 and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said nobody was hurt.

Harper Adams University near Newport in Shropshire has been named the Modern University of the Year by The Times, external newspaper.

It's the second time it's been given the honour and it also finished runner-up as the overall University of the Year.

The news came out as the latest students celebrated their graduation today.

The university, which specialises in agricultural courses, was ranked 17th in the The Sunday Times Good University Guide list - the first time a so-called modern university has finished inside the top 30.

Modern universities are defined as those established after 1992.

Its previous-best came in 2016, when it was ranked 36th.

Vice-Chancellor David Llewellyn said: "These results will really help fly the flag for higher education in Shropshire."

Here's a flavour of the climate change demonstrations in Shrewsbury, which have involved a lot of music and chanting, led by organisers with megaphones.

Several hundred people turned out, including a lot of children.

The protests seem to be benefiting from the nice weather.

Bumper crowds are in Birmingham's Victoria Square, as well as in Shrewsbury, Coventry and Hereford.

Climate change protesters are gathering in Shrewsbury town centre this lunchtime.

About 300 have turned up and the organisers say they're "shocked" at how many are in the Square.

Callum Fone from Extinction Rebellion said: “I’m feeling overwhelmed. The turnout has been insane."

He said the numbers were "far more than any other previous strike we’ve had”.

Early fog and mist will disappear leaving a dry day with sunny periods and highs of 22C (72F).

It will be a dry and clear night with lows of 7C (45F).

Some 345,000 trees are set to be planted in Shropshire by 2050 - one for every person in the local authority area.

It's the idea of the Lib Dem Councillor for Ludlow North, Andy Boddington, and Shropshire Council approved the measure at a meeting this morning.

Mr Boddington is also proposing to introduce a tree bank scheme, external, so that for every old tree felled, a new one is planted.

he said people could be encouraged to make a financial contribution to the scheme if they fell a tree and that it could also apply to developers.

David Beattie is the first person in England to be banned as a landlord after misleading tenants.

A primary school in Telford no longer wants to be obligated to share its community rooms and sports facilities with the local community, saying it's under pressure for space as pupil numbers grow.

Lawley Village Primary Academy was given planning permission for them in 2014, on the condition they "shall be made available for general community use".

It now wants to the condition removed or altered, to take away that obligation.

It its application to have the conditions amended, the school said it had made a "significant commitment" to the local community, but it "must take account of the very real practical limitations of what can actually be accommodated going forward”.

The chair of Lawley and Overdale Parish Council, Jayne Greenaway, objected and said: "There is a growing demand for these facilities and no possible alternative provision exists or is proposed”.
