  1. Counting to continue in Bradford on Saturdaypublished at 20:44 BST

    Grace Wood
    in Keighley

We are set for a second day of counts in Bradford tomorrow.

We're still waiting for results in Bradford Moor, Little Horton, Great Horton, Royds, Wibsey and Odsal, Heaton and Frizinghall, Manningham and Toller.

Reform UK have done very well here today, will it continue tomorrow?

  2. Calderdale: Counting set to go late into the eveningpublished at 20:33 BST

    Corinne Wheatley
    in Halifax

We're at the halfway point in Calderdale.

Nine of the wards have been declared - and it has been a good night for Reform UK so far.

One supporter cried out "it's a landslide" as Reform took every seat in six wards, plus a further seat in another.

The Greens have reasons to be cheerful too - they have four councillors elected so far, compared to their three before the election.

Counting has just started in the remaining nine seats, so it's looking like it's going to be a late one in Halifax.

Leeds East MP Richard Burgon calls on Sir Keir Starmer to step down as Labour leader

Speaking at today's vote count in Leeds, where Labour lost overall control of the council, Leeds East MP Richard Burgon says the prime minister "needs to be honest with himself, honest with the party and honest with the country and accept he's fought his last election".

Burgon, a backbencher who has been in Parliament since 2015, says Starmer should set out a timetable for his departure, but stops short of naming his preferred candidate to take over. The successor needs to represent a clean break from the current cabinet, he adds.

Burgon lays the blame for today's local losses at Starmer's door and says Labour councillors have lost their seats "through no fault of their own".

  4. Three-way splitpublished at 19:29 BST

    Grace Wood
    in Keighley

There's been a three-way split in Keighley East. Angela Jayne Baker took a seat for Reform, Caroline Firth won for Labour and Conservative Angela Fish also took a seat. The seat was previously held by three Labour councillors.

  5. Kirklees: Baroness Kath Pinnock calls the election a 'tsunami'published at 19:28 BST

Long-serving Liberal Democrat councillor Baroness Kath Pinnock, who managed to come out on top after a toe-to-toe, vote-for-vote scrap in the Cleckheaton ward, says tsunamis may "come in quickly" - but they also go out quickly too.

Pinnock, whose ward now has two Lib Dem members and one from Reform, says some voters - who had previously been loyal to the Lib Dems - told her they were voting Reform this time.

"People have seen money go to other parts of the North, while they've also seen their leisure centre and town hall closed," she says.

    "That really matters to people."

  6. Final numbers confirmed for Leedspublished at 19:18 BST

    Elizabeth Baines
    in Leeds

Here's the final breakdown for Leeds City Council after today's results.

Labour’s control over the authority was lost after falling from 56 seats to 48.

They required at least 50 to maintain an overall majority.

    Overall turnout was 41.49%.

    No party majority
  7. Three leaders toppled in Kirkleespublished at 18:48 BST

    Richard Edwards
    in Huddersfield

Over in Kirklees, it was triple trouble for party leaders on the council.

John Lawson, who led the Lib Dems, lost his seat in Cleckheaton after 16 years. He vows he will "absolutely" be back.

David Hall, who led the Conservatives, was also defeated in Liversedge & Gomersal, having first been elected in 2004.

It comes after Labour group leader on Kirklees Council, Carole Pattison, lost her seat earlier.

Card showing result of election for Leeds. No party majority (Labour loss)

The word from the count is that Labour has lost overall control in Leeds.

There are 99 seats on the council, so a party would need more than 50 elected councillors for a majority.

We're still waiting on a full breakdown of the numbers. Stay tuned...

  9. Bradford Council leader loses her seatpublished at 18:19 BST
    Breaking

    Grace Wood
    in Keighley

Bradford Council leader Susan Hinchcliffe has just lost her Windhill and Wrose seat.

The ward was won by Reform UK councillors Sally Jane Birch, Stephen Broadbent and Chris Howlett.

Hinchcliffe, who has been the council leader for a decade, thanks her Labour colleagues and says she is very proud of the legacy she leaves behind.

"It's disappointing for Labour councillors who have worked so hard and are absolute heroes for the district," she says.

She adds: "No matter what the result is today, the answer is not Nigel Farage."

  10. Calderdale: Reform UK's group leader re-electedpublished at 18:09 BST

    Jessica Bayley
    in Halifax

Daniel Sutherland, leader of the Reform UK group on Calderdale Council, has retained his seat.

It means the party has already surpassed the three councillors it had on the council prior to yesterday's vote, with plenty of seats still to be declared.

Sutherland was re-elected in Illingworth and Mixenden with 1,739 votes.

  11. Kirklees residents share 'apathy with the establishment'published at 17:53 BST

    Richard Edwards
    in Huddersfield

Reform UK's Sarah Wood, who has won the Liversedge and Gomersal seat, says people on doorsteps in Kirklees have been sharing "a lot of apathy with the establishment".

"There was also a ground swell of 'we just need a change' and need to turn the ship around, along with a willingness to have faith," she says.

Wood adds that it's "not over yet", but it "does not look great for Labour".

  14. People in Bradford 'desperate for change' - Reform UK campaign managerpublished at 17:20 BST

    Grace Wood
    BBC News, Yorkshire

Bradford has gone from no Reform UK representation to six councillors - in Wyke and Queensbury - and only four wards have been declared so far.

Reform campaign manager Oliver Williams, 28, who is standing for the Royds ward, says they are "over the moon" so far.

"The message from the doorstep really is that people are desperate for change," he says.

"For too long people feel that Bradford has just gone into decline, and we're here to offer a fresh new alternative to get the basics right and hopefully deliver a better future."

  15. 'Difficult day' for Labour in Leeds - council leaderpublished at 17:13 BST

    Elizabeth Baines
    in Leeds

James Lewis, Leeds City Council leader, admits it has been a "really difficult day" for the party in Leeds, adding it reflected a nationwide trend.

"It's not all been one-way traffic, but we have seen some disappointing results today," he says.

"Some really good, hard-working councillors have lost their seats."

  16. Wakefield turnout highest in a decadepublished at 16:56 BST

    Gemma Dillon
    West Yorkshire political reporter

Wakefield has seen an overall turnout of 36.6% - the highest in 10 years.

From what I've been told, it sounds like many people who have avoiding voting for many years and first-time voters made the decision to get to the polls yesterday.

As it’s an 'all-out' election with every seat up for grabs, people feel their vote really matters and can influence the look of the entire local authority.

  17. Reform UK take Wyke in Bradfordpublished at 16:31 BST

    Grace Wood
    in Keighley

The first Reform UK seats have been won in Bradford, as Ian Reed, Adam Thompson-Day and Ian Walker are declared for Wyke.

The area was previously represented by Labour councillors Tom Hughes, Sarah Ferriby and Andy Walsh.

    Aisha Iqbal
    Political reporter, Yorkshire

We've had the turnouts announced in Bradford, with huge percentages revealed in some areas.

Some of these figures are usually only hit for general elections, so this is very significant.

    • Ilkley – 63%
    • Wharfedale - 57%
    • Baildon - 51%
    • Bingley East - 54%
    • Shipley - 50%
    • Airedale - 50%
  19. Kirklees: Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem leaders all lose seatspublished at 16:12 BST

    Richard Edwards
    in Huddersfield

The leaders of Kirklees Council's Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat groups have now all lost their seats today.

Kirklees' Labour group leader Carole Pattison is managing a smile, despite the Greens and Reform UK ripping through the red-rosetted ranks she took into local election battle.

Pattison will remain group leader until a Labour meeting on Sunday, but it's unclear if there will be a Kirklees Council Labour group to lead as the party is yet to win a single seat.

  20. Leeds: Nilesh Chohan 'lost for words'published at 16:02 BST

    Elizabeth Baines
    in Leeds

Nilesh Chohan, who ousted Leeds City Council deputy leader Jonathan Pryor in the Headingley and Hyde Park ward, says he is "immensely proud" to represent the area where he has lived his entire life.

Pryor is a big figure in Leeds Labour circles, so this was quite the seat to win.

Chohan says he is "looking forward to working with the whole of the Headingley and Hyde Park ward".

He pledges to uphold the "Green values" of community cohesion.
