Image source, UK ParliamentAndy Burnham and Kemi Badenoch have clashed over Jackdaw, government debt and the chancellor's upcoming Budget in this week's PMQs.
The opposition leader began by accusing the PM of "dithering" over the decision to approve drilling at the North Sea gas field, which the Conservatives approved in 2022 before it was blocked by a court. Burnham said his government was fixing what the Tories had “messed up”.
Burnham also revealed he had asked the chancellor and energy secretary to look into removing standing charges from gas bills. But the announcement raises questions, our cost of living correspondent writes.
Badenoch went on to attack the PM over rising borrowing costs and the economy, calling on the government to cut welfare spending in next week’s Budget. Burnham said he wouldn't apologise for doing "the small things that help people have better lives", adding he was addressing issues the Conservatives had avoided, like social care.
Elsewhere, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on Burnham to bring the UK closer to Europe by rejoining the single market and customs union, to which the PM said he would be attending a UK-EU summit soon and would appreciate cross-party support on getting a good deal from the bloc.
Burnham also faced a question on support for Ukraine, following diplomatic tensions between Kyiv and Washington in recent weeks, including over Ukraine's ability to prevent Russian attacks.
