After a torrid ten days, dominated by evidence of another breakdown in relations between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, the tone in Oslo seemed curiously upbeat.
The Norwegian prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, said he was glad to have been able to "straighten out a few things" (adding that there was "nothing to gain…from digging into what was said yesterday").
President Zelensky seemed especially pleased with the outcome of a morning conversation with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.
The crucial issues of early warning of Russia’s ballistic missile strikes had, he suggested, been resolved.
The two men had also discussed Ukraine’s access to Patriot interceptor missiles and Elon Musk’s Starlink system, both vital for Ukraine. Zelensky said he expected "good results".
Finland’s president, Alexander Stubb, said it had been "a good day for peace", with plenty of progress made "under the radar" on substantive and technical issues.
Steve Witkoff is taking an updated set of proposals to St Petersburg to find out what Vladimir Putin thinks. How long this optimistic moment lasts is anyone’s guess.
