Andy Walker in his Siesta garden

Andy Walker in his Siesta garden

Where there's mud...

It’s surely a vote for irony... After one of the most miserable Manchester summers in living memory, Andy Walker has won gold at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton for his Mediterranean garden!

Entitled ‘Siesta,’ his patio garden complete with palms, pergola and pretty flowers conjures up lazy afternoons in the Spanish sun. But the reality has been quite different.

"It’s been horrendous," said garden designer Andy from Bolton. "The showground is like a swamp. We’ve had nine days to get it ready and I think we’ve had one dry day.”

But after a long slog through the Tatton mire, Andy of Walker Landscape Design has come up smelling of roses.

‘Siesta’ – created for Christie’s Hospital - has picked up a gold award in the Back-to-Back Garden category, which has left Andy ‘astounded.’

And it’s been attracting both donations and compliments from visitors to the RHS Flower Show.

"Winning the award has been terrific considering all the bad weather," says Andy. "Maybe the judges appreciated the irony in that!"

"The public certainly seem to like it too which is more important."

Siesta’s plants:

• Trachycarpus palms
• Cordylines
• Achilleas
• Marguerites

RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park is from 18 - 22 July 2007. BBC Radio Manchester is broadcasting live from Tatton throughout the event.
