How to pass exams

On this page we've got lots of advice to help you prepare for English exams like IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, FCE, CAE and others. We'll also give you links to some fantastic programmes that will help you.

Get used to exam questions

We have two series with exam-style questions . Use them to practise answering exam questions. The Listening Room, will help you prepare for listening exams, and The Reading Room will help you prepare for reading exams.

  • Learn how the questions work in the exam that you are taking. Often, you can find previous papers or sample papers.
  • Find a teacher who can help you with the type of exam that you are taking. 
  • Read exam questions carefully, and use any spare time to check your answers.

Build your vocabulary

Good vocabulary will help you in any English exam. You will understand more and be better at saying and writing what you mean.

Build your vocabulary by listening to and reading lots of English. Listen to the programmes below regularly and read the transcripts or subtitles to learn new words.

Become more confident

Exams can often seem scary. We have a series called 'Beating Speaking Anxiety' which will help you feel confident speaking English. It is great preparation for speaking exams.

Learn what English (really) sounds like

English words often don't sound how you think they will. Learning more about prounciation helps you prepare for speaking exams. 

It's also a good way to prepare for listening exams.
