Episode 260513 / 13 May 2026

We are here to answer your questions about English language, culture and life. I'm Buli, and I'm with Becca.

Becca
Hey Buli. How are you today?

Buli
I'm very good, thanks, Becca. How about you?

Becca
I'm doing well thanks! I did a little bit of shopping on my lunch break.

Buli
Oh, cool! Did you buy anything nice?

Becca
Yes! I found the shoes I was looking for. I'm going to a party this weekend. And also, this cool neck scarf.

Buli
I see, you're already wearing it! It's a lovely colour. You must really like it. But, Becca, I think I can see that the tag is still on…

Becca
Ah, the price tag? Hold on a sec, let me take it off. Why don't we listen to the question while I find a pair of scissors.

Buli
Of course.

Question

Buli
By the way, it's a very nice neck scarf indeed, Becca. Is it a designer label?

Becca
It is! I would never have labelled myself as a fashionista because I don't own many designer labels, but I really loved it when I saw it in the shop.

Buli
Which shop did you go to?

Becca
There's a vintage shop a few streets away. It's a little hard to find because the building is completely covered in graffiti tags.

Buli
Oh, I think I've seen the front of the shop before. I'm sure a few friends have hash tagged their pictures of that building.

Becca
Cool! Did they tag you in the picture?

Buli
Maybe. Let me see and I'll show you.

So, Becca, are these words interchangeable?

Becca
Well, yes! If you're talking about a small attachment to something that gives you more information about it, then you can usually use them interchangeably.

Although, tag is more often used to refer to a piece of paper or card hanging or attached to something, like the price tag in a clothing store, and label is more often referring to something stuck on the surface of something else that is more difficult to remove.

Buli
Aha.

Becca
Exactly. But it's probably more helpful to know the other types of labels and tags which have different meanings.

Buli
Of course. We used quite a lot of these words in our conversation before.

Becca
First, let's talk about the different meanings of label. Actually, you asked me if my new neck scarf is a designer label. So, we can use label to also refer to the company that made the thing. Another example of this would be a record label.

Buli
Yes. And this is often used in the art and fashion industry.

Becca
I also mentioned how I usually wouldn't label myself as a fashionista because I don't own many designer labels. So, when we label someone, we're saying that they are a certain way because of their characteristics or qualities. Be careful though, it's often used unfairly or negatively.

Buli
Hmm, I see. For example, it might be rude to label a certain person because of a very narrow observation.

Becca
Exactly.

Buli
So, Becca, what about tags?

Becca
Well, we can use tag to talk about many different things that provide information or link one thing to another. The first time I mentioned a tag was in the form of graffiti. We also talked about hashtags. That is to link something or somewhere to a post on social media. And a picture tag is often used in pictures of people to link them to the photo, again, mostly on social media.

Buli

Becca
Yes. And again, 'tag' can also be used as a verb to describe the action of adding a tag.

Buli
