Health and Social Care

Activities

The Health and Social Care section of this site provides a range of activities aimed primarily at students on Apprenticeship Schemes within the Health and Social Care sector. We have worked towards providing resources that cover elements contained in the curriculums for:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Care
  • Key Skills Level 2 Communication

The activities aim to provide students with the opportunity to practise skills and collect evidence that they could include in both their NVQ and Key Skills portfolios.

Although the resources are aimed at Apprentices, they will also be useful for anyone else training in the Care sector and could be used with staff who are not be on an Apprenticeship programme.

The activities are centred around a scenario based on work at a Residential Care Home. The student takes on the role of a Key Worker assigned to a client who has just arrived at the home. The client is an elderly lady in the wheelchair. The student is required to read the client's case history and talk to the client in order to gain enough information to put together a Care Plan. Following this, the patient will need to reorganise the client's room to accommodate some of her own furniture and make it suitable for a wheelchair user.

The Flash Activities
The student has been given some documentary resources in order to complete the activities:

  • A Care Plan: This is blank and the student is required to complete one section based on the information they gather.
  • A Case History for the client, Mrs. Moore.
  • Extracts from the National Standards Minimum Guidance Document: This contains extracts from the Environment section.

They will be required to use these in conjunction with the interactive Flash exercises.

Part 1: The Care Plan
Using the Case History and the Flash activity allowing students to 'talk' to Mrs. Moore, the student will be able to complete a Care Plan assessing the client's needs and requirements.

Part 2: Room Organisation
There are two activities in this section. The scenario states that Mrs. Moore would like to replace some of the original furniture in the room with some of her own furniture. The student is required, first of all to convert measurements from imperial to metric and then plan a reorganisation of the room. They are advised to refer to the relevant National Minimum Standards guidance.

Further Activities The students have also been provided with a series of further activities aimed at developing their communication skills.

Full details of the activities are in the Apprentices section:
