The Scenario
To help you to gain practice and portfolio evidence for your Care NVQ and your Key Skills, we've come up with a set of three Flash activities. They are all based on a scenario set in a Residential Care Home.
You take on the role of a member of staff at Grange Farm Residential Home. You'll be looking after elderly people who are resident at the home, trying to make their stay as comfortable as possible.
A new client, Mrs. Moore, has arrived and you've been assigned as her Key Worker. She's in a wheelchair and has been brought in by her son, Leslie. They've both been asked to wait in the bedroom that has been assigned to her.
You'll need to go and have a chat with Mrs. Moore to introduce yourself and find out a bit more about her daily routine. The questions you ask her will allow you to assess what help she needs and what resources the home might need to supply her with.
Mrs. Moore would also like to bring in some of her own furniture, so you will need to check the measurements and plan a reorganisation of the room, which must conform to national standards.
A note about the downloads
It would be a good idea to save copies of the documents on your desktop.
You might also think about printing out a copy to keep in your files.
The Activities
Part 1: The Care Plan
You need to put together a Care Plan for Mrs. Moore. Different homes will have different formats for their Care Plans. However, they all contain the same kind of information. We've put one together for you to complete for Mrs. Moore.
Download the Care Plan [Word Document]
Have a look at the Care Plan and find out what information you'll need to complete it. You need to fill in the shaded boxes. Your first job is to look through Mrs. Moore's Case History.
Download Mrs. Moore's Case History [Spreadsheet]
Using the Case History and the notes you get from the first activity, Talking to Mrs. Moore, you'll be be able to fill in the Care Plan.
Flash Activity: Talking to Mrs. Moore
At the end of this exercise, you will be able to print off notes relating to what Mrs. Moore tells you. You can use this to refer to when you fill out the Care Plan. You can also use this for your NVQ and Key Skills portfolios.
Part 2: Room Organisation
There are two activities in Part 2. Both deal with the issue of Mrs. Moore's furniture. Mrs. Moore's son has brought in the details and measurements of the furniture she wants to bring in. You'll need convert the measurements to metric and then reorganise the room so that it's suitable for someone in a wheelchair. You'll need to remove some of the furniture provided by the home, to make room for Mrs. Moore's furniture.
Before you start the exercise, have a look at the following document, which will tell you what you need to take into account to conform to national standards.

Conversion
Mrs. Moore's son has provided measurements for the furniture in imperial units. You'll have to convert them to metric before you can reorganise the room.
