"There's no way she approved this": the internet reacts to Taylor Swift artwork

Taylor Swift only has to drop a hint about releasing new music and it feels like the whole world stops to react.

It happened again this week when the artwork for new single Patient Zero was released. But this time the socials have seen a backlash to the image, with suggestions it's been altered with photo editing software or AI.

Some fans are convinced there's more to this picture than you'd first notice. BBC Bitesize Other Side of the Story takes a closer look.

The main issue people have with the picture is how Taylor's arm appears. Some say it has been edited so much that her shoulder and armpit look like they've disappeared.

One poster said on X (formerly Twitter): "I thought the announcement was fake when I saw the pic. I thought, there's no way she approved this." Another added on Instagram: "Someone fire whoever is in charge of Taylor's Photoshop?!?"

Not everyone seemed to notice, though. One person responded to an Instagram post speculating about the image edit with the comment: "Who in the world looks so closely at this type of thing?"

Taylor Swift is renowned for leaving clues about her forthcoming material. Her official website had a mysterious countdown in the days before the release of her single from the Toy Story 5 soundtrack while fans turned detective, looking through Taylor's online output for clues of the song's existence. It was a theory that turned out to be true!

Some people think this image could be another game to get the Swifties in a spin. One said on an Instagram post: "Knowing her it was intentional," while further down the same thread, somebody else commented: "Maybe it’s a clue. Taylor is unpredictable."

Subtle hints and teases can be part of a marketing campaign. For example, Taylor herself posted a message earlier this week where all the letter o's had been replaced with zeroes - relating to the title of her new single.

The clamour for things to talk about can also lead to false information being circulated and believed, from fake news about the Eras Tour to AI-generated images of Taylor's wedding to Travis Kelce.

At the moment, we have no evidence that her single artwork is a hint about anything. Keep an eye on Taylor's social media and wait for any confirmation which supports the social rumours.
