What is a Spending Review?

Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne set out the Government's four-year public spending plans (2011/12 to 2014/15) in the Spending Review announcement made on 20 October.

A Spending Review (SR), or sometimes a Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR), is a UK governmental process led by HM Treasury. It sets firm departmental public expenditure limits over a set number of years.

Until the World Service moves into the licence fee in 2014/15, World Service is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and subject to the Spending Review.
