Olympic gymnast Ruby Evans could take centre stage for Wales on day three of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Evans was part of the Wales team that just missed out on a medal on Saturday night.

It is the men's and women's individual all-round finals with Evans and Emily Roper in the women's event this evening, after Elliot Vernon and Alexander Niscoveanu have competed in the afternoon.

Olympic champion Matt Richards will be hoping to add to the first Commonwealth Games medal he won on Saturday night as part of the 4x100m mixed freestyle team, when he goes in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Lewis Fraser will compete in the men's 100m butterfly final, while other swimmers competing include Meghan Higgs, Theodora Taylor, Sophie Davies, Kyle Booth, Josh Inglis and Meghan Willis.

Wales netball play their second game against Scotland in the morning session, while Nikole Roberts kicks off the weightlifting campaign in the women's 48kg category.

There are two Welsh boxers in last 16 action with Welsh bantamweight Helen Jones facing Kadijat Ajishola, while heavyweight Connor Williams lining up against Namibia's Petrus Jacobus Kotze.

The bowls programme continues with Ross Owen in men's singles action against Scotland's Jason Banks, while the women's pairs Amy Williams and Lauren Cowan face Kenya.

Para-mixed bowls pair Julie Thomas and Steffan James, aided by directors John Wilson and James Jones, will play Scotland in the evening session.

After a win each on Saturday, the 3x3 wheelchair basketball sides are back in action on Sunday with the men playing South Africa and the women facing Nigeria.

Wales narrowly missed out on a medal by one point in the women's gymnastics team final after an agonising wait in Glasgow.

Ruby Evans, Emily and Abigail Roper, Frances Stone and Jemima Taylor set a competitive score of 153.400 before being made to wait until Australia, Canada, England and South Africa had completed their routines.

The Welsh team, frequently shown on the big screen across the two-hour gap, sat together in the crowd near their squad of supporters who had been vocal during their performances earlier in the day.

After three rotations, Wales sat in 4th place with England occupying the bronze medal spot, with just the floor left.

There was some controversy when the incorrect music was played for English gymnast Shanna-Kae Grant's routine, which only added to the tension.

Abigail Martin stepped onto the podium as England's final competitor, knowing that a score better than 12.350 on the floor would be enough to leapfrog Wales onto the podium.

Martin secured the best floor score of the night with 13.250, giving England the bronze with a final score of 154.300.

Australia claimed gold with a score of 158.400 while Canada secured silver with 157.300.

The team event serves as qualification for individual events and Ruby Evans qualified in second for Sunday night's all-around final.

She will be joined by Emily Roper who finished in 11th.

Evans has also qualified for the balance beam, floor and uneven bars finals.

Emily Roper will be joined by her twin sister Abigail in the vault final and will also join Evans in the uneven bars.

The boxing campaign finally started for Wales when light-heavyweight Daniel Pitt defeated Samoa's Dee Ioapo in the men's 80kg category.

Pitt, 20, was the first Welsh boxer in action after being the only one unfortunate enough to be drawn in the last 32 round.

The Brecon product is a youth world champion with five international gold medals and is also back-to-back British champion.

All five judges scored in favour of Pitt who will now face Papua New Guinea's Kua Gunua Mua in the next round.

Pitt picked up a cut above the eye following a clash of heads but will hope that will not affect him in his next bout.

Connor Williams, Helen Jones, Orlando Holley-Sotomi and Owain Harris-Allan have been drawn in the last 16 stage.

Defending champion Rosie Eccles and Niamh Brookes are one win away from a medal after going straight through to the quarter-finals.

Wales netball side suffered a 59-50 defeat by Uganda in Pool B after a costly third quarter.

In their opening game, Wales led 31-28 at half-time but the African side won the next period 17-8.

Uganda, sixth in the world rankings and a place above Wales, did not let their lead slip.

Georgia Rowe top-scored for Wales with 30 goals while Shadiah Nassanga and Mary Cholhok scored 27 and 23 respectively for Uganda.

Wales also lost centre Vicky Booth in the final quarter to what looked like an ankle injury.

"We were going out there to win today but it was just that third quarter where we gave away far too much possession," said Wales captain Bethan Dykes.

"I'm not really sure what happened. I'll have to go and have a look at it. We didn't feel like we changed a lot, but they came out and adapted, which we needed to do quicker.

"Defensively, we won a lot of balls today, but [in] attack, we weren't clinical enough in that third quarter."

Wales face hosts Scotland next on Sunday at 09:00 BST.

Wales 3x3 wheelchair basketball men's side ensured it was a winning start to the Commonwealth Games for both Team Wales squads on Saturday by defeating Malaysia 14-13 in a dramatic opening match.

After the women's team had beaten India 16-1 in Glasgow, the men's squad of Alex Wilson, Ben Johnson-Rolfe, Dan May and Will Bishop followed suit.

May led the way with eight points, including a late winner, Wilson chipped in with five, while Johnson-Rolfe accounted for the remaining score.

Wales men will face further group games against South Africa and Scotland.

Newport County were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at Bath City after a late leveller by former Exiles striker Alex Fisher.

County led 1-0 at the break thanks to forward Ged Garner, who was put on the transfer list in May, scoring with the help of a deflection off former Exiles defender Kieran Parselle.

Bath equalised three minutes after the restart when Danny Greenslade's set-piece went in but the visitors responded quickly to restore their lead with a near-post header by teenage defender Harrison Halpin.

Fisher, who scored two goals as hard-working targetman for County in 2021-22, levelled against the run of play from close range in the 79th minute to earn a draw for the hosts from the Southern Football League Premier Division Central.

Interim Newport manager Chris Todd will be in charge for a first Rodney Parade fixture when the Exiles face League One Reading in a friendly on Tuesday, 28 July (19:30 BST).

Wales women's bowls pair of Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen continued their unbeaten run in the competition by beating Botswana 2-0 this afternoon.

It was a dominant performance with the first set success of 8-2 followed by a 15-1 second set triumph.

After defeat against England's Sam Tolchard on Friday night, Ross Owen bounced back in the men's singles bowls competition with a 2-0 victory against Jamaica's Robert Simpson.

Para-mixed pair Julie Thomas and Steffan James, aided by directors John Wilson and Jamie Jones, lost their unbeaten record in the B2/B3 category following a tie-break defeat to New Zealand.

Wales lost the opening set 9-0 before bouncing back to force a tie-break with a 5-4 second set success but New Zealand eventually triumphed.

Wales will play South Africa this evening.

The parents of Wales' first medallist of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games say it has still not sunk in that daughter Ela Letton-Jones won silver.

The 19-year-old finished second in the women's S13 100m freestyle behind Australian Jenna Jones.

"I was calm just before it, and then literally five minutes before it suddenly dawned on me that it was happening," said her mother Jo.

"I just went to pieces. We were making so much noise, it was quite embarrassing, really.

"We lost control and we were just swimming with her. It was brilliant!

"This morning we woke up and it was just like, 'wow, that's just happened'. All the messages, everyone's support has just been phenomenal."

Letton-Jones will race once more in the S13 50m freestyle and dad Iolo is more relaxed now Ela has won a medal.

"There's no pressure, really," he said. "It's only 50 metres, so just swim as fast as you can."

"I'm just going to enjoy now," added mum Jo. "Whatever happens, she's done so amazingly, anything else would be a bonus."

Wales will have medal opportunities in the pool on Saturday night after the morning qualification heats.

Rhys Darbey and Dylan Broom finished third and fourth respectively in the one and only heat of the S14 men's 200m freestyle.

The mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team of Harry Milne, Kieran Bird, Medi Harris and Meghan Higgs qualified fourth fastest to set up a medal opportunity in Saturday evening's final.

Olympic champion Matt Richards is likely to come into the Wales team for the final.

Tyler Melbourne-Smith put the disappointment of Friday's 4x100m men's freestyle relay disqualification behind him by qualifying for the 400m freestyle final.

Wales were disqualified in the relay after Melbourne-Smith left his block early on the third leg.

Sophie Davies and Alexandra Bastone failed to progress in the women's 200m freestyle heats in the first event of the second day in the pool.

Davies, who was part of the 100m freestyle relay team that finished fifth in Friday evening's final, was sixth in her heat and Bastone placed fifth.

Another of the Welsh 4x100m freestyle relay finalists, Rebecca Sutton,had qualified for the 100m backstroke semi-final on Saturday evening, a feat that was emulated by Welsh pair Theodora Taylor and Amy Crowley in the 100m breaststroke.

Taylor, 17, who also competed in Friday night's relay final, finished second in her heat to initially qualify.

Taylor and Sutton later pulled out of the individual events to concentrate on the relay.

Lewis Fraser is targeting a place in Sunday night's men's 100m butterfly final after he qualified for his semi-final in ninth position.

Team Wales experienced its first 3x3 wheelchair basketball action in the Commonwealth Games today as the women's team of Anastasia Blease, Chloe Morgan, Libi Phillips, Molly Lander beat India 16-1 in Glasgow.

Captain Blease led the way with seven points, while Lander scored five and Phillips added four.

"That was incredible," said Blease. "What an amazing feeling.

"I didn't think I would hear the crowd. I thought I would tune them out but they were right there.

"It was special to get out on the court and create history, but to also get a win was amazing."

Wales play two further group games against Nigeria and Scotland.

The men's team of Alex Wilson, Ben Johnson-Rolfe, Dan May, Will Bishop are in action against Malaysia later on, followed by group games against South Africa and Scotland on Monday.

After narrowly missing out on Birmingham four years ago, Wales' men and women were making Commonwealth Games debuts in Glasgow.

The teams received wildcards after finishing second in their respective qualifying finals.

Wheelchair 3x3 basketball is a 10-minute game with no quarters or halves.

Each team is made up of three players with one substitute. Unlike basketball rules, the shot clock runs for 12 seconds instead of 24 and the game is played in a half-court with just one hoop.

The first team to score 21 points wins. If no team has reached 21 points after 10 minutes, the team leading wins. In the event of a tie, the first team to score two points in an overtime period wins.
