Hooligans I find this culture quite facinating and scary at the same time. A part of me say "yes" to this, another "no". I mean - these are gangs (firms) agreeing to meet each other to fight, so I guess that part is OK. The other thing is when innocents is gettin involved... Kim Greenock

John Caudwell Phones 4U I watched "Trmouble at the Top" and read the BBC Web report that Phones 4U are "back on track". This is barely credible (sales up profits way down!). Twenty minutes into the "Trouble at the Top" programme it was clear that the main problem was a lack of (suitable) mobile phones. What has JC done? Sacked the MD; sacked various execs; banned all emails ("heh! heh! heh!"); terrorised most the management; and then (out of the blue) offers his sales force £1m bonuses. What a load of cobblers! Meanwhile they have no phones!!! Clearly, he should have sacked the buyer, recruited a top-notch buyer/merchandising team, and/or done a deal with the mobile providers. This is classic result of mis-analysing the problem, knee-jerk (someone's at fault) reaction leading to a very expensive and pointless promotion. I predict that Phones 4U will not get back its profits until it tackles the real problems. Roy Ashworth Chiddingfold

hail The hail storm that pounded North Staffs on Sunday 21st March 2004 showed that the hailstones bore a strange resemblance to the so-called 'blueberries' on Mars recently discovered by the NASA robot rover "Opportunity". The so-called 'blueberries' are concretions of hematite mineral believed to have formed in past watery conditions on Mars. So,the watery ice hailstones that pummelled North Staffs on Sunday are not that far removed from the hematite stones on Mars ! What a coincidence. Phill Parker Newcastle,Staffs

lily I was very saddened to hear of the death of Lily Jones, the woman who fought so hard and so long to set up a much-needed shelter for battered women in Crewe. When you work as a reporter as I did, you realise how few genuine "good guys" there are - most of us are after all just trying to get by - but Lily was one. She could get very angry, and she was fiercely determined, but that was when she was dealing with the frustrations of bureaucracy ( and there were many!). But, with women who suffered so much at the hands of brutal men, she was always understanding - even whne the women themselves weren't always as grateful to their "saviour" as I felt they should have been! She was brave, and gave of her bones and flesh to the projects - which I told her was too much for any ordinary person - but Lily was no ordinary person. mark stewart ex-bbc crewe

to teresa ... chatrooms I too heard the interview when the "expert" was saying that closing chatrooms would not stop the paedophiles. I agree he was insensitive bit the point remains. More children are killed and maimed by cars EVERY YEAR than have ever been lured to paedophiles via chatrooms - so if we acceopt the risk from cars, why do we not accept the risk from chatrroms?
The fact is that cars won't go away, and neither will chatrooms, so we must educate kids (AND parents!) better to understand the problems of chatrooms Mark Braley Codsall

chatrooms I usually enjoy listening to radio Stoke but have to say I was offended this morning. The website director on Janine Machin and Kevin Ferneyhough's show had an attitude which I think was far too liberal and careless. In reference to the issue of Microsoft closing down their chatrooms... I was delighted.. but horrified when he dismissed the statistic of ONLY 12 children being lured and attacked over the last 12 years.. well, for me, 12 children is 12 children too many.
He was far too careless in saying that - imagine if a listener had lost a child through abduction. I'm sure that if one of those 12 children had been one of his own, he wouldn't have said that. It was very insensitive and I'm sure I was not the only offended one. Teresa Phillips

Crewe and the railways I've not been into Crewe town centre for a couple of years. Some of the most interesting buildings in the centre were demolished ages ago - eg the ?art deco? Odeon, the old bank buildings and Post Office. The railway industry could help with first impressions of Crewe. South of the station is Steptoe's railway scrapyard, with old locs and carriages. First impressions do count and people arriving from the south must wonder what they're coming to. Les Platt Tarporley, Cheshire

I Am campaigning to get all village names put back into all address. I live in Great Wyrley, in South Staffordshire. I am classed as Walsall By Royal Mail!!! Stone With regard to the news item about the cutting back of trees alongside the railway line in Granville Terrace, Stone, I would like to point out that Granville Terrace will not be the only street affected.
The works being carried out by Network Rail will affect the whole length of the West Coast Main Line through Stone, including the Conservation Area of Granville Terrace, Kings Avenue and Tunley Street. Kings Avenue and Tunley Street will be particularly badly affected if the works go ahead as planned. Network Rail's original intention was to fell all of the trees in Kings Avenue/Tunley Street completely.
Because of the local outcry, they are now having second thoughts and are considering other options. These are still likely to be devastating, however. It appears that Network Rail are taking the easy option for them in proposing that the trees are felled - no trees, no maintenance, no liability. It is worth noting that the trees in Kings Avenue/Tunley Street are in perfectly! good condition. Network Rail have confirmed this is the case. Denis Bettany

Stone You have an article on your Staffordshire and Stoke site which talks about the new Lichfield Garrick theatre and actor Corin Redgrave's involvement in its opening season.
However, you say that Lichfield is a south Staffordshire town, which, as we know all too well here, is wrong. Lichfield is a cathedral city. As much as it doesn't deserve this grand title, it's got it.
Ideally, you could add this to your records to avoid any repeated wrongs in future. Ok thanks. Ali Harris

Will do! See Garrick article |
cameras I've read that Staffordshire Police are having a 'clamp down' on people not renewing their road fund licence. Using mobile cameras is not enough as not all non-taxed cars are actually used by their owners; some are just left parked on the roadside. What happened to the wardens who patrolled the side streets looking for such tax dodgers? Hilcoram

canavan we were so upset to hear of Lloyd's condition...more so as our 10 month old grandson Lewis has just this last few weeks been diagnosed with Krabbe Disease..which is within the same group of these dreadful diseases.. these children have not even had any chance at life.
Would it be possible to pass our good wishes onto the family of Lloyd..and wish them all good luck. Is there any way that we could learn how they fare in the US? Your article had great relevance to us..as before it all we saw was no hope, and a year filled with greiving... . Glenn Nicholls

public transport Just a few words about the local transport last week(wednesday)i was driving towards Hanley along High Lane when i was passed by an ambulance with all the sirens going , soon after i caught up with the Ambulance who was trying to squeeze between two buses parked either side of the road loading pasengers
neither bus moved and the Ambulance had to wait untill one of them moved off this took several minutes. I was disgusted by the drivers of these buses , and appauled at the sighting of the stops , who gave these people carte blanche to block up the roads and cause this type of snarl up , i hope the ocupant sues the pants off the bus company and i hope no one reading this ever has to stand waiting for a bus to move in a emergency. My Posting about Garbage etc. Just to set the record straight, in my posting about our garbage and co mingled recyle system as operated by the city of New Rochelle NY. On the BBC front page for Stoke, I am quoted as saying that England/Stoke is "mucky". I made no such comment, but gave a brief word picture of how things work on this side of the Atlantic. I am presented as being from Stoke, and living in the USA, not so. You will see that I sign myself as "Man of Kent", and that is where I am from originally. I trust that this will clear up any misunderstanding for the BBC readers. John, "MAN OF KENT". New Rochelle, NY, USA.

Yes - our mistake. Apologies |
Litter?Garbage etc... rely to terry (below) Terry, you make agood point about litter etc. I have noticed that this is a big problem throughout the United Kingdom, and the same complaints are expressed in postings to the BBC, from many differt counties.
I do not wish to lecture, but here where I live in New Rochelle,NY and throughout most of the communities in this vast land, "recycling" is an on going and flourishing event. Today,it being Wednesday, the City of New Rochelle will pick up at the curb, newspapers and cardboard products. Tomorrow, is standard garbage pick up, and Monday will be the same. Next Wednesday will be "co mingled" items, glass and metal cans( not paint cans, that requires prior arrangement with the City. Alternate Thursdays will be garden waste pick up in bio degradeable paper sacks, and if you have an old fridge to dispose of, or other items, ie old TVs, and items of that nature, you call the City, and they will collect the item.
They do not pick up cars, but you will not see large household items dumped by the curb as I believe happens all to often in England. Plastic bags are recycled at local supermarkets, and can be deposited in bins inside the main entrance. We also re cycle soda cans and beer bottles too. At time of purchase the state of NY levies an extra five cents (a nickle) on each can or bottle purchased, and at supermarkets there are machines where you can redeem the items for script to the value of however many cans and bottles you place in the machines.
It works well Terry, and you will seldom see cans and bottles scattered. Of course nothing is perfect, and people have to be "educated into doing this. It takes a while, but now for most people to re cycle is as second nature as wearing a seat belt when driving your car.
Of course, the City does not do all this work for free, and we have to pay pretty high City taxes, but it works, and the streets are clean and tidy. By the way, there is also a City law that demands that if you walk a dog, then you must also pick up any "do" made by the dog. failure to do this can result in prosecution and a hefty $200.00 fine if convicted. As I said,I do not wish to lecture, but it works very well over here, and there is no reason why it could not work in England. John, Man of Kent. New Rochelle, NY, "Forty Five Minutes from Broadway"

Barlaston Park when are the police going to deal with the thugs that kick a football outside the shop in Ivyhouse Drive. Every night i have to listen to their foul language and the constant bangs of the football hitting my property.
Police visits twice at night at the very most are obviously not enough to stop this anti social behaviour. Despite constant phone calls to the police nothing is ever done. Why don't the police stop persecuting motorists for doing 32 mph in a 30mph limit and get out and police the community properly. J Stoke On Trent

draton manor 2003 hi, you said the other day that there was too much litter on the a500 and if people were found leaving litter around they would be prosicuted. All we have to do is look a bit closer, we have two waste disposal sites next to the a500. Kimberlys and Cherry hill. I could imagine lots of waste paper and plastic bags being blown all over the place on a windy day if it was not covered properly. Why should we have to pay twice for waste removal regards TERRY

draton manor 2003 I was most disapointed with the park this year. once we had paid £16 each to get in we found the following rides not working - the pirate ship, the tea cups, maelstrom, cabel cars, sky flyer. There was no sign up to tell you this when we arrived at the park. We complained to a park supervisor who said you were only charged off peak prices to get in (on peak price £17.50) so we saved a whole £1-50 each WOW. when i pointed out it was off peak he just walked off. I would NOT recomend this so called family park to any one! Stephen Hand Birmingham

broadcast of "Wit" on BBC2 A truly stunning if harrowing perfomance on a difficult subject. This was the best truest picture of terminal illness I have ever witnessed. To see the intelligent mind struggling to cope with the deteriation of body and the changing attitudes of people around brought back afresh very vivid memories of our son (aged 19). On our personal journey through the experience of losing him to cancer 5 years ago we had much better relationships with medical staff than portrayed in the play but I can state that the end scene of the friend who gets on the bed to comfort is very very true . At that stage then that is the only thing left. A return to early childhood comes about and the only thing one can do for the patient is give love. Debra Roughton stoke on trent

Ring around the Sun! Hi there! This is a point I'd like to address to Paul Damari on Tim's programme..... I wonder if anyone else in our area experienced the 'Ring around the Sun' phenomena on Saturday morning (around 0940 in Hanley)?.....
The sky was a hazey mist, with the sun trying to break through, when I noticed what seemed to be a trail left by an aircraft (about 30 degrees away from the Sun).... I put on my polarised sunglasses and took another look.....only to see a ring, almost complete, horse-shoe shape really, showing the colours of the rainbow!....Wow!.....
It only seemed to last for about 5 minutes and was almost invisible without the glasses, but glad to see it! It reminded me of the 'Ring around the Moon' effect experienced earlier in the year, which Paul explained was due to refraction caused by ice-crystals high in the atmosphere.
Was this phenomena caused in a similar way (by the mist) and why did it only last for such a short period of time?
Perhaps you may wish to make an important Safety point here, that people should not attempt to photograph such events, as pointing equipment with lenses into (or near) the Sun can be very dangerous to sight! Cheers,
ZZ Steve Hanley

Each day is one day closer to your death Remember that each day that goes by is one day closer to your death.
For many tomorrow will not be another day. Never forget this as life is far too short to worry about trivial matters. My first wife died aged 23. Please think of this before you complain about anything else ever again.
The world is a fantastic place and we all have a part to play. I tell all the people in my life that I am close to that I love them because I do. Do not life pass you by and remember there is life beyond Coronation Street and Eastenders. Kiss your children EVERY night.
May God bless you all

a useless police force. My neighbours are drug dealers. The police are aware of this and have been for several years. The dealing started around 8 years ago while the dealers were still in school. The police as yet do nothing.
I have recently heard that the dealers are on the drug register but surely only people who want help should be on it - how badly do they want to get off the drug if they still provide it to other people?
My suspicion is that they are on it to obtain methodone to sell on. I have known people who have had their futures put in great jeopardy by these people and I also know that they target local school children. Me Newcastle-under-Lyme

What's up with our roads? As a humble resident of Burntwood, and barely qualified as a resident of some 30 years and harking back to when I lived in Smethwick, when it was in Staffordshire in the late neolithic age I am puzzled by Stafforshire's road improvment programme.
I drive all over this fair land but always end up back in our diverse and beautiful county. Why are we one of the few counties in the country that wreck perfectly good road surfaces by liberally soaking them in tar and covering them in several layers of grit. The county engineers then decree that it is carefully rolled(very lightly) and then allowed to damage any car, cycle or pedestrian that passes near it for many weeks to come.
This is only the beginning. The road itself becomes very noisy to drive over(one or the main causes of driver fatigue) and in the winter the first sharp frost disloges the remaining grit to be liberally sprayed on passing motorists and pedestrians. Any grit that is not deposited on passing traffic or pedestrians is washed down the drains to provide a blockage during the winter months. This does provide further employemnt for Severn Trent staff.
Are we helping out with the European grit mountain or is this some hair brained scheme designed to help the respray industry and bring down unemployment? Either way it seems a rather poor way to repair roads.
I drive in France, Belgium and Holland a couple of times a year and you see very little road works and the roads are perfectly servicable. Are we wasting money here? Dave
