David Beckham spotted in Hanley! Or was he?

David Beckham

David Beckham? Reading his own book?

What would you do if you saw David Beckham walking down the street? One of the most famous footballers in the world today, just wandering round town?

Well, when 'Becks' lookalike Luke Lightwood came to Hanley, shoppers there had a similar experience, as Helen Thomas explains...

Girls swooned, children ran around screaming, men stared and old ladies had to have a sit down.

Why? Because they saw 'goldenballs' himself, David Beckham, doing a spot of shopping in Stoke-on-Trent!

So could Becks really be swapping Paris for the Potteries, the Champs Elysees for Hanley High Street?

Spec-tacular
He popped into a department store, looked at sunglasses and even checked out the deals on Spanish holidays in the travel agents…

Surely Beckham isn't thinking of signing for Stoke City or Port Vale?

Well probably not.

Because surprisingly, this isn't the real David Beckham. He's in Madrid. This is Luke Lightwood, a David Beckham lookalike from Stafford.

'High maintenance'
As you can imagine, being a lookalike takes quite a bit of personal care; David Beckham is a highly pruned specimen of a man who does like to change his hair, tattoos and general style on a regular basis.

And at the moment Luke is a bit behind…he's still on the longer bleached blond hair of a couple of months ago.

England skipper David Beckham
Beckham ponders: "I hope this Luke Lightwood can't play football, otherwise I'll definitely be out of a job!"

He's willing to shave it off though if he gets a few jobs, and even says he'll wear a sarong!

And in preparation for his new persona, Luke's been doing his research; he bought Beckham's autobiography to look at photos, practise that smouldering pose, and learn a bit about his double's history.

Multi-talented...
But he's not just a Beckham lookalike, Luke's also an artist and a chef…and he does enjoy a kick about (in midfield obviously).

Although he might have to change allegiance from his current team, Aston Villa.

And the similarities are endless… Luke also has a long distance relationship, his girlfriend is in New Zealand for six months, but he assured us that there aren't any baby Staffords or Longtons on the way!
